CLEAR LAKE, Iowa - Donald Trump, the billionaire who until now hasn't had to spend much of his own money to run for president, has made the influence of money in politics a theme of his campaign. He has suggested his Republican rivals are "puppets" for seeking the support of GOP donors like the Koch brothers. And he has defended his own contributions to both Republican and Democratic politicians as the cost of doing business in a world in which officeholders can be bought and paid for.
Here in Iowa Saturday, Trump made his most blunt condemnation yet of what he says is the corrupting influence of money in politics. As a businessman, Trump explained, "I've got to give to them, because when I want something, I get it. When I call, they kiss my ass." And that includes, he said, the Republicans who are running against Trump in the GOP presidential race.
"These politicians, they're so bad," Trump told a full house at the historic Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake:
You know, it's interesting. I was looking at the ones I'm running against. I've contributed to most of them - can you believe it? I've contributed to most of them. And one of them said, No, I don't think you've contributed to me. They found out I did. I contribute to everybody. I've given to Democrats. I've given to Hillary. I've given to everybody, because that was my job. I've got to give to them. because when I want something I get it. When I call, they kiss my ass. It's true. They kiss my ass. It's true.
I didn’t put Trump there, Trump put himself there.
Even when Trump himself tells you, you still don’t believe it.
And of course I never said that at all.
The music of the Beatles excellent because the sum of the whole was so much greater than the contribution of any of its constituent members.
Trump and Cruz, together? I like them both. And the sum of their association...one a learned scholar, the other a brash, headstrong doer, will yield similar positive results.
Executive: Trump
Veep: Cruz
Don’t get better than that.
All other options are worth considering.
MHO
Who was better? John or Paul?
Trump, or Cruz?
It is. But how done change it?
I’m all for a complete reset, even though many will have to sacrifice.
Other than that, we can refuse to participate (which I have by going Galt), but I don’t expect those that have ambition and drive to bow out. I admire those qualities, usually.
Trump: “When I call, they kiss my ass.”
Me: When I call, I tell them to “kiss my ass.”
That’s the difference money makes.
Just say no to Trump, because tone matters, not leadership or results.
Damn! I was going to vote for Trump, but I can’t now cause of his hair.
I won’t vote for him because he is a liberal. You’re free to make your own decisions, of course.
Me too.
It’s not that trump isn’t conservative enough. It’s that he’s not conservative at all.
There is nothing there for a conservative. Might as well go third party.
