Browns hire Mets' Paul DePodesta as chief strategy officer

DePodesta - who helped the Mets become National League champions last season - will be above newly hired executive vice president of football operations Sashi Brown in the organizational hierarchy and will report to owner Jimmy Haslam and team president Alec Scheiner, according to sources.

...

The Browns expect DePodesta to help members of the team's player-development, sports-science, high-performance and analytics departments maximize their efforts. He will also have a significant voice in determining Browns personnel decisions, including what, if anything, the team does this offseason with former first-round draft pick Johnny Manziel.

...

Those who have worked with DePodesta during his MLB career describe him as being "off-the-charts intelligent and a great human being."

Although his success has been achieved in professional baseball, DePodesta has wanted opportunities in the NFL.

They are going full-scale “analytics” as their philosophy. Not sure how it will work, but it does at least look like they are trying to stabilize their vision.

I think it’s a good indication that Manziel is history.

Looks like Jerry Jones is going to get his drinking buddy after all.

Pack the expansion Browns up for Indy, have (the current) Irsay return the Colts to Baltimore, and have the Modell team return to Cleveland as the proper Browns.

Or just watch them get stomped by the Bengals year after year.

I know that Manziel wants to go to Dallas but why would Dallas want him? I know the Cowboys have quarterback issues but with all the baggage Manziel brings with him I don't see it being worth it.

Because what Jerry wants, Jerry gets.

I feel sorry for the players who possess maturity and self-discipline, having to put up with all of this. It's amazing that at some point (the fight with his girlfriend along the interstate at the latest), Manziel wasn't assigned a full-time baby sitter.

I feel sorry for the other players. That third-string quarterback wasn't awful. They just might've been better off with him, if they had a few practices where they learned the art of scoring touchdowns.

Looks like the first thing he is going to do is call Jones and trade Manziel to the Cowboys for their 1st round draft pick.

My scenario: Swap #1’s. Trade Manziel for Cowboys #2 pick.

Because what Jerry wants, Jerry gets.

Jerry wanted him two years ago and they went with that Notre Dame tackle instead. I can't believe that Manziel's antics since them have raised his value. Still there's a reason why the Cowboys haven't won a Super Bowl in 20 years.

A baseball strategy officer was hired by a football team.

Expect the football Browns to hire more players that throw left and have a high on-base percentage.

WTF Haslam, could we get a hockey coach to evaluate NCAA players? There is a limit to the “money ball” concept, it is called 11 man football where individual statistics suck PRIME EXAMPLE Brown’s have two Pro Bowlers on offensive line and the O line is probably the worst in football.

Let's put our tin foil hats on. Maybe Jerry told Johnny to act up as bad as he could. The thought being that maybe the Browns would cut him or will be willing to let him go for a song?

And all of a sudden Johnny Touchdown will turn into a model citizen, saying his prayers every night, drinking nothing stronger than milk, and spending all his off hours volunteering at an animal shelter because he just can't get enough time with kitty cats. If all that turns out to be true then I'd have to hand it to Jones; he pulled off one of the all-time greatest scams in the history of football.

Bullpen needs some work, too.

makes total sense- since moving back to Cleveland the football people the organization has hired have been worse than awful...so they’ll let baseball people give it a try now!!
