This might go down with New Coke as one of the worst marketing decisions ever.

Expect the sports talk radio collective to begin the drumbeat in unison Monday morning: “It’s all because we don’t have an 8 team playoff. Four teams is not enough. We need an 8 team playoff... “

Now under ENORMOUS pressure from ESPN's advertising partners, that cable channel now has two choices:

1. Force the Tournament of Roses committee to move the Rose Bowl game to New Year's Eve (maybe a 4 pm PST start) during the years the Rose Bowl doesn't host a Coilege Football Playoff (CFP) game or ESPN drops the Rose Bowl from the CFP hosting rotation.

2. Make the Rose Bowl a permanent first CFP game, but move up the start time slightly earlier than 5 pm EST.

I wouldn't be surprised that ESPN and the ToR committee chooses the latter, since it would allow the Rose Bowl to stay on New Year's Day and we get a new, continuing tradition of one of two CFP games always being a Rose Bowl.

I got tired of the constant lecturing from espn..
especially when costas gave a speech on gun rights.
ESPN has become the MSNBC of the sports world.
try fox 1 sports-— for SPORTS with no politics

The first playoff semifinal was down 45% in viewership versus last year; the late semifinal was down 34.4%.
Tired of watching spoiled, ungrateful thugs; tired of watching all the "look at me" nonsense; tired of all the hype as if any of this means something.

Think football is on a downward slope both college and professional. Oakland, San Diego and St. Louis to a small degree that are not emptying their wallets to the thieves of the NFL to make billionaires even richer.
ESPN is also suffering from cable cut. When they award woman of the year to Bruce Jenner, people turn away and find another show.
I don’t watch ESPN and I did when they had the World Series of slow pitch softball. Disney is suffering from ESPN cable cut. They get 45% of their profits from ESPN. No more.
Football is dying before my eyes

Aren’t the teams that get to these playoff games all supposed to be sorta good?

So why all the boring, one-sided blowouts over the last 2 days? No real back-and-forth at all!!

What a PR disaster for college football.

Put the Bowl games back on Broadcast TV, or at least make them accessible to those of us without cable TV, and they would gain millions of viewers.

(BTW, I detest ESPN)

Well, part of it is that we can keep tabs on the games on our electronic devices, iPhones, etc. So rather than waste the whole day watching the games (particularly if we don’t have a dog in that race), we can go about our daily lives and chores while keeping tabs on the game on our phone.

It doesn’t help that they’re over-calling the “targeting” and such, trying to turn football into badminton to please the ‘fruits and nuts’ lobby. It’s a semi-violent sport. If people don’t like that, they don’t have to play.

Maybe if they stuck to football instead of all the soap opera I might think about it.

I would expect low ‘end of the game’ numbers for the Rose Bowl mismatch, as well. Doing a better job of matching opponents to avoid blowouts would help the ratings.

EVERY Jan 1 game was at least a 3 score blowout. Notre Dame played it the closest, only being blown out by 16 points.

On the 31st, Peach bowl was only a 14 point margin; Orange was 20 points and Cotton was 28 points.

Football – along with “professional” wrestling – is the Heavyweight Division of the Celebrity Worship Club where watching 300 pound men being paid 6 and 7 figure salaries to knock the piss out of one another will somehow make the lives of those who witness this activity better and more worthwhile.

The Beautiful People Division, which serves a similar purpose (generally sans the violence) is currently headed by some Armenian American Princess named Kim Kardashian. She is known for the substantial size of her gluteus maximus muscles, so large they have been assigned their own zip code and are believed to have an independent weather system. As is the case with the Heavyweight Division, watching and reading about the comings and goings of the members of this division is also believed to enhance the lives of the average citizen.

In the early days of the American Republic, there was also a Political Division. It was disbanded due to loss of interest after the election of “progressive” hero Woodrow Wilson, father of the One World forerunner of the beloved United Nations, the League of Nations, the Federal Reserve and – drumroll, please – THE INCOME TAX!

Want to do something that might actually have some impact on YOUR LIFE more important than watching those 300 pounders beat the crap out of each other? You can start by visiting this site and learning how YOUR rep and senators are screwing you and your kids and grandkids out of their birthright: www.gradegov.com

What was wrong with New Year’s Day? I was out at a party on NYE, and put the games on DVR, although the 2nd one was over before the half. I am a big time CF fan, but I am not going to change social plans to stay home for it. ONLY the Super Bowl deserves that — it IS a social occasion.

ESPN is the most PC liberal sports broadcaster possible. The evil empire of sports will do its best to ruin football and any other contact sport. They’ll have michael Sams kissing other players between plays as they adjust their balloon suits and flags! When they kicked off a commentater for telling a basic truths about muslims, that’s all I need to know.

I agree, I do not understand why they scheduled the games for NYE. I remember seeing an article last summer where they were trying to reschedule the games but the BCS committee would not allow it.

Flow here attributing this to everything from Brice Jenner to decline of football to cable cutting, but this is simply stupidity on display putting two critical games on a night when people are doing things other than sitting on the couch. Many are working at 4pm central on NYE or getting ready for parties, nights out, early events with kids, etc. on a year where New Years was a Friday and with an open day on Saturday, this was simply terrible, terrible planning by college football. They could have had two full days of nonstop big games yesterday and today.
