And having known cops who’ve had to shot the mentally ill or psychotropically disturbed - not to mention having known what happens to them in the press and the courts afterwards - I’d say this is a seriously unhappy event.

It seems every year more and more people engage in anti-social behavior, for whatever reason and the cops are called upon to resolve the situation. They respond knowing they may be called upon to make a split second decision(s) with life ending results. They are laying their life on the line, their careers, their future, their family's future on the line 'to serve'. When they take action, it is final, no do-overs.

Who in his right mind is so driven 'to serve' as to open themselves and their families to such risk?

I have a family member who is a cop. She was a paramedic, and then she said that she had decided she wanted to stop things before they happened rather than clean up afterwards.

It’s God’s call to people like that. Are there bad cops? Sure, just as there are bad priests and bad teachers and many other people who have betrayed their vocations. But the call is there.
