Vatican Paper Slams ‘Star Wars’ Calling It ‘Confused And Hazy’

The newspaper owned by the Holy See also wrote that the latest installment in the franchise is not a proper sequel but more of a reboot.

"Not a classy reboot however, like Nolan's Batman, but a twisted update which fits today's tastes and a public more accustomed to sitting in front of a computer than in a cinema," the anonymous reviewer said, adding the film seems to draw from the "sloppiest current action films derived from the world of videogames."

The L'Osservatore Romano review also laments too many close-ups, and even faults the "much-publicized" return to in-camera effects, saying they are "often anonymous and lacking in dramatic value."

L'Osservatore Romano is not new to going against the grain in its reviews of record-breaking Hollywood blockbusters. It slammed "Avatar" as "sentimental hokum."

It was.

Star Wars is closer to reality than man-made global warming.

Is there nothing the Vatican will not comment on?

Maybe the Pope didn’t watch it on I-MAX.

Does the Vatican have an I-MAX theater?

Does the Pope eat Popecorn when he’s in the theater?

Is the Pope jealous of Darth Vader because his costume isn’t as cool?

What do I care about the Pope’s movie criticisms?

The newspaper is not part of the Catholic Church. It is a garbage article. There are American newspapers that have given Star Wars negative reviews...should we say America is opposed to Star Wars?

While I suppose it is remotely possible that the Pope wrote the review — it is very unlikely that he did.

"L'Osservatore Romano" is no more "The Vatican" than "Stars and Stripes" is the U.S. Army.

I have not seen it yet, but probably will this weekend. But based on what I’ve heard so far (including some spoilers), I’d have to agree. The whole plot sounds like a big mashup, but with excellent photography and special effects. It also sounds like the heroine (Rey) is some kind of superwoman.

What made the original “Star Wars” great was the conflict with the evil Empire. While they have restored that (somewhat), it sounds like the Empire-reboot is pretty lame. We’ll see.

Catholic Dogma seems to be pretty far down the list.

I can’t talk about it with my family because they haven’t seen it. This Sarducci guy is right about one thing; it is a reboot. It is basically the same as the reboot of Star Trek in that everything is just a little different in the new universe. When people say it feels more like the original trilogy...

I was there in 77 to see the original. I was so disappointed this new one plowed no new ground.

Was there in '77 as well. Have not seen the most recent 3, and now this new one...meh. "Lens Flare" Abrams just doesn't do it for me - I don't like the style he uses - high on effects, while the story line suffers.

Hollywood studios know it's risky to push new stories, so why not go with a "reboot." The fan base already exists, and even if it's a stinker, money will roll in.
