Star Wars: The Force Awakens--The Dark Side Review (Spoilers)
Weekly Standard ^ | December 22, 2015 | Jonathan Last

This review deals largely in spoilers concerning The Force Awakens. Normally, I don't think spoilers actually spoil much, but for this case the viewing experience is greatly enhanced by coming to the movie cold. So I'd suggest you really not read this until after you've seen it.

Unless you're not going to see it and are just curious. In which case, go ahead and read. You filthy commie.

Agreed, it’s more fun the less you know before watching it.

Author says there’s no way this or any other movie could live up to expectations except maybe The Empire Strikes Back. I disagree and think he should take a look back at Gone With TheWind.

The bad guy Kylo Ren is Han Solo & Princess Lei's son.... really. arrggh lousy lazy writer. Plus he does not look like a tough guy but a baby faced mass killer. Kylo Ren grandfather is Darth Vader.
Han & Leia are bad parents.

We saw it today. Both hubby and I thought it was a stinker. 2 stars.

Saw it ... would give it 3 stars. Certainly much better than any of the prequels, but basically the same story as Episodes 4+5 combined but with a new generation. Once you understood that ... you could predict what was happening next pretty easily. There were a couple little twists that were enjoyable, but they were matched by some plot continuity mechanics that were just totally wrong based on what you already “knew”, such as Rey successfully being able to plant a suggestion in a storm trooper when she had never met a Jedi (other than Kylo just prior to the scene), did not know they could do that, or if they could, how they could do it. The big takeaway from this movie is that we are back to the future being unknown, and we have 3 new heros to root for as well as 3 new villans. All in all, I enjoyed the show.

I’m inclined toward the former. Hardcore fans expected something completely new yet completely connected with 4-6, a vast well-developed epic crammed into 2 hours. I was a bit bothered by the retread aspect of it, expecting something fresher ... but what is Star Wars but rebel discovering-their-inner-Force underdogs against a vast empire of fallen Jedi in a climactic asymmetric battle? anything more original than that would have been met with lack of faith to the source material.

So what’s the grand target for Episode 9 going to be? artificial quasars?

My husband and I took my daughter to see it yesterday. I nearly fell asleep twice, and then it was suddenly over. I was left thinking, “that’s it?” The Marvel stuff has been much better.

I saw it yesterday. Maybe some minor spoilers here, but more comments than spoilers.

The technology of the movie was a big improvement over the original. Special effects were great.

But what about the technology in the movie? Not so much. Consider: in the original movie, the main characters Luke and Leia were young adults, probably in their 20s. Han Solo might have been in his 30s. The main characters in this movie are the third generation, i.e., the grandchildren of the original generation, even if not of the original characters. Thus something like 50 to 60 years have passed in the Star Wars universe since the original picture. But the technology hasn't changed: still the same tie fighters, the same x-wing fighters, the same battle armor on the Storm Troopers. No technological change in 50 years? Seems unlikely.

The movie tried to be too much of an echo of the first one.

One of the most memorable scenes in the first movie was the Cantina Scene. Sure, it was stolen from several hundred Western movies. It's a bar scene. But instead of cowboys, it was populated with aliens. In the original movie, it was done right. It felt right. So of course there had to be a cantina scene in this rehash. But it wasn't well done. It was obviously an echo.

In the first movie, we had a flight of fighters attacking the Death Star. We saw a rebel flight leader, frontal view, in his fighter cockpit, wearing a red uniform, directing the flight in their attack. In this movie, it looked like the same flight leader, in the same uniform, in the same cockpit, directing the attack on a cannon. They could have taken the sequence from the original and changed only the sound track.

In short, there wasn't a new idea in the whole movie. It was a rehash of the original.

Having said that, I'm glad I saw it. If I hadn't seen it, I'd have wondered if I'd missed something. Now I know I wouldn't have missed a thing. I'll play my DVD of the original, and wish there was someone in Hollywood with the brains to do a sequel right.
