What the Critics Are Saying About Star Wars: The Force Awakens
vulture.com ^ | Devon Ivie

Critics screened the film earlier this week, and with the reviews rolling in, we've compiled a roundup of what they're saying, and in an effort to be as spoiler-free as possible, we only included parts that don't specifically talk about the plot.

"Reinvigorating the franchise with a welcome surge of energy, warmth and excitement after the misbegotten cycle of prequels released between 1999 and 2005, incoming writer-director J.J. Abrams seems to have had the original three films firmly in mind when he embarked on this monumental new undertaking, structured as a series of clever if sometimes wobbly callbacks to a trilogy that captivated a global audience and helped cement Hollywood’s blockbuster paradigm.

"Still, the reassuring familiarity of Abrams' approach has its limitations: Marvelous as it is to catch up with Han Solo, Leia and the rest of the gang, fan service takes priority here over a somewhat thin, derivative story that, despite the presence of two appealing new stars, doesn't exactly fire the imagination anew. ...

"In the end, Star Wars: The Force Awakens suggests the work of a filmmaker who faced the exciting yet unenviable task of partially reassembling one of the most beloved ensembles in movie history, furthering their characters' adventures in a meaningful fashion, and helping them pass the baton from one generation of action figures to the next - and emerged, in the end, with a compromise solution that, even when it's not firing on all cylinders, has been put across with sufficient style, momentum, love and care to prove irresistible to any who have ever considered themselves fans.

"Risking heresy, it's worth noting that Abrams actually did smarter, more inventive work on his 2009 reboot of 'Star Trek,' no doubt in part because he was working with a less heavily guarded enterprise." -Justin Chang, Variety

Blah blah blah.

I’m not going to see it.

My 8th grade boy has no interest in seeing it.

The first three were entertaining, but I fail to see any deep allure of a cherried-out poverty row space and horse opera serial.

I assume it is probably less offensive than the bulk of the trash put out by Hollyweird.

Kind of same here. Lucas sooooo ruined the prequels that it tainted everything but Episode IV and V (the best).

Anyways, I have a 6 year old and I was 6 when my Dad took me to the 1977 MAY showing and I HOPE I can give that to my son.

After waiting in line 6 hours for Episode I, I am going to wait about a week to see Episode VII and will spend as little energy and effort getting there.

I’ll probably watch it when it hits the discount second run theater or free TV. I never could force myself to watch the garbage of the second trilogy.

Never seen so much hype of the hype. I rarely go to the movies as part of my boycott of liberal Hollywood. I’ll wait for it on Nefllix or Amazon Prime eventually.

Based on what Lucas did with the script for the last SW flick, and made George Bush into a Sith Lord (”If you’re not with me, you’re against me - only a Sith deals in absolutes!”), let’s examine the possibilities:

* Is Rush Limbaugh a Hutt?
* Is Sarah Palin his dancing slave girl?
* Are all the GOP candidates Gungans?
* Is Hillary younger than Han Solo???

I was afraid of this. A clumsily directed movie designed to placate the Star Wars nerdverse filled with esoteric and archaic throwback references to SW canon in an effort to prove its authenticity. It would be as if Abrams was saying to himself, “Okay. After the disaster of the prequels we have to make this specific movie in order to mollify the masses so they achieve catharsis. and then we can move on to making the movies I wanted to make.”

Is Sarah Palin his dancing slave girl?

Sarah could wear that outfit -- and look great.

"Turning George Bush into a Sith Lord (”If you’re not with me, you’re against me - only a Sith deals in absolutes!”)"

The last SW movie would have been OK (or at least a lot better than the first two prequels) but for the horrible dialogue, and your examples are some of the best (or worst, depending on your view). The statement "Only a Sith deals in absolutes" is itself an absolute which essentially makes Obi-Wan a Sith.

I went to the second trilogy. I looked at it sort of like a cousin's wedding..... Sort of obligated to go, don't really want to miss anything, but not really excited about it.

If this one bombs as hard as "Phantom Menace" ... I'm done.

Lucas killed Star Wars — by make Luke and Leia brother and sister.
