John Fischer, who lives in the 500 block of Oak Street with his wife, said the couple's three Chihuahuas started barking about 7:45 p.m.
Fischer, who was in the kitchen, didn't think much of the noise. The dogs were in the bedroom with his week-old granddaughter, and he assumed they were reacting to a visitor they were expecting.
But as he left the kitchen, Fischer glimpsed something running out of the bedroom and into the yard. It was a coyote, and it was carrying something.

Fischer had enough time to see the animal had seized Eloise, an 8-year-old Chihuahua.
"The dog was screaming," he said. "It was awful."

My family used to live out near the canyons. We lost several cats presumably to the coyotes; only one, Tina, ever made it to old age. There was also owls in our area -- I heard hooting late at night -- but I doubt they were the culprits. I once saw a pack of coyotes scurrying into the bushes not far from our home.
In the end, we stopped owning cats; there was no point.
My daughter moved to suburban Denver at the beginning of the year and she was very surprised to see no cats at all in her neighborhood. She spotted the very rare one snoozing by a window and looking out. Her friends at school explained to her that most of them don’t survive long if they get out due to the coyotes. That’s a far cry from the burbs in our area where she grew up and you can generally let your cats outside. She got a dog instead of a cat which has probably turned out even better for her.
Sorry...didn’t mean to seem like I was jumping down your throat....I was reacting to the notion put forth by many people that some areas of the country (world) belong to certain animals. And then they argue we have no business invading “their” territory.
The coyote was not thanking the devil, the coyote was thanking God.

They stay away from my place, I shoot’em.
A stick won’t do you much good against a hungry, determined coyote.
I would recommend something on the order of 38 caliber and up.
I prefer 12 gauge with single ought buck.
Kill every damn skunk you see, they are famous for rabies, same as coons.
The wolf scare was probably and most likely a large coyote, there aren’t any wolves down that far south as far as I know.
We have a few packs about 200 miles north of me, moving down out of southern Oregon, when they get to my property line, they get dead.

Coyotes are in some of the upscale neighborhoods in the center of Houston. I have seen them myself!

You may be right. Just going by reportings by neighbors, and city sources. We do get coyotes, there's a report in our local news of two coyotes last night just around the corner from our house. There have been rare occurrences of Oregon wolves in California, sometimes cavorting with coyotes (very rare), but people may be confused when they encounter a coyote. A wolf is huge. Anyway, coyotes on our block last night is a concern to us because of our cats.
Here in the Washington DC area we have what have become to be called Eastern Coyotes, about fifty pounds heavier than the scrawny western type.
They have been spotted in downtown DC and the suburbs in MD, having the run of Rock Creek Park, which essentially bisects DC along a N-S axis.
After repeated reports of sightings a local police chief went public denying such creatures existed. Several weeks later he recanted after spotting several in the vicinity of his home.
