Amazon prime vs Netflix: need opinions on which (or neither)
11/28/15 | me

Posted on 11/28/2015 4:35:16 PM PST by spacejunkie2001

I currently have netflix for both dvds and streaming. Streaming doesn't seem to have alot of choices. Was thinking about signing up for Amazon Prime. I currently get my kindle books and vitamins there.

Anyone here have input on the diff between AP and NF and if one is better than the other?

Thanks!

I have both, since Prime helps with other Amazon purchases.

I have both as well.

I was a netflix subscriber before Amazon, and took the Prime thing for the 2 day shipping not the video.

The upside of NEtflix is that if it’s availabel on DVD you can subsribe to that service for an up charge.

THe downside of Amazon Prime is that you can watch more things but they are $1.99 or whatever to view. I’m not real fond of that aspect of Amazon Prime and we keep the kids locked out of Amazon.

Amazon Prime is really more about the totality of what they offer than any one aspect. I have had Prime for years for shipping. The streaming service (movies, TV and music) are a plus. I watched a bunch of shows on Prime that were not available anywhere else at the time, and unlike Hulu, they do not disappear after a while. There are lots of hidden gems and older shows and movies. I now also get Hulu Plus no commercial + Hulu Showtime and Netflix. For the latter 3 I am paying less than $35 a month for basically the ability to watch almost anything we want especially since we like the more interesting dramas and sci-fi type stuff and not sitcoms. Amazon I will have regardless and it’s well worth the $8 and change per month.
For years we were promised “a la carte” cable and it never materialized. The big providers (uverse tv, cable, satellite) really have nothing compared to the versatility of the online services (which you can cancel or suspend as you wish with no ramifications). The only caveat is have good internet service.

I already subscribed to Prime for the 2-day shipping because I order a
lot from them. I do not find that Netflix has as great a section for streaming as Prime does. I am mainly into old movies and TV shows and documentaries.

Amazon Prime now lets you download things that are free for later viewing. You can’t do it on a computer - unless there is a work around for that which I haven’t figured out.

You can download to you phone or to your Kindle Fire...probably tablets, too.

Netflix doesn’t let you download.

I had never seen the American Horror Series. 4 seasons are free. Just started watching their original programing -The Man in The Castle. About Japs and Hitler winning the wars and splitting up America.

Netflix gave me Murdoch Mysteries and Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries. Never heard of either of them but have really enjoyed them. From Canada and Australia.

I think Robert Taylor(Longmire)is the best male actor to come along since Clint Eastwood and , yes, John Wayne. The guy is just wonderful as Longmire. “A man’s man” as they used to say with a strong sense of loyalty and justice, though he is still clumsily “sensitive” in a believable way. Figures that we have to go to Australia to find such an actor.

The rest of the cast is excellent too.

” usually requires broadband and a torrent client”

I get all my movies etc off the internet and never needed either.
In fact I tried Netflix and the image was acceptable over my DSL but I can download better quality, HD if I wish.
And ‘everything’ is available... except good live sports feeds.
Looked at the free Amazon Prime trial offerings and there was nothing of interest I hadn’t already seen.
Most link sites and content sites are mighty ‘iffy’ though, there’s only a few good ones.

Yes, I should've mentioned that as well. With a streaming player like Roku, you can put the YouTube streaming app on there and send anything from YouTube to your TV.

You can find pretty much any content on YouTube. The other night, I streamed some MST3K flicks for my son who was visiting for Thanksgiving. The video quality was very good. Then we put on some Three Stooges, Marx Brothers and then some WW2 documentaries.

One of my favorite scenes from Longmire

we really need a strong conservative president that picks strong fcc commissioners that will once and for all, put the death knell on bundled stations. That is all mandated to prop up the networks as no one would order them if it were ala carted.

Eh, not impressed with AP and the Fire Stick which is how watch the movies and videos. Thought I wouldn’t have to pay so much out of pocket. They rotate free shows alot.

After listening to the song in the Longmire episode I had to go find it. I found a video that is actually from another song that someone put together with the Sail song. It is a perfect fit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3bWjvomZmZQ

Surprisingly, it also fits into the Longmire thematic of weathering the storm and letting go to move forward.

You may also want to check out YouTube as they have a lot of old movies and some old TV shows.

I haven't watched a movie on YouTube for quite a while because although the one and only one I watched was a regular length film, I had to watch "Part 1" and then "Part 2" etc. Is that still the case or will one click on the video show the whole film?
