I don’t know that it should be celebrated, but why is celebration the joy of “fools”? We don’t need the ME at all for energy any more. Russia has long borders with ME nations and other Mohammedan nations. Why doesn’t Russia have a greater interest in maintaining order in the ME than we do? Our recent foreign policy certainly doesn’t indicate that we are better than the Russians in dealing with Mohammedan countries in general. Was our foreign policy helpful in N. Africa? Have we made the Balkans safer for Christians? Did our 70s foreign policy improve Iran? Have we acted wisely in Iraq? Has our foreign policy improved Syria? Have we been funding terrorists indirectly? So, what makes you so certain that 1. we are better managers of the ME barbarians, 2. our national interest in the ME is greater than Russia’s, and 3. we can’t get along quite nicely without buying anything that the ME produces? If you think that Russia playing a larger role in the ME is the prelude to Russia taking over the world (and I’m NOT saying you are), you’re living in the Cold War 50s and 60s. Russia is not the Soviet Union, and, I might add, it was the US, and to a lesser extent the EU, that fomented the coup that deposed the elected government of the Ukraine and thereby precipitated the current problems there.

Russia also wants the price of oil to go up.

Their moves in the M.E. may ultimately help them immensely if it really gets destabilized.
