I’ve always felt that if the Civil War had not been fought, the death knell of slavery would have been the internal combustion engine.
Agriculture is very labor intensive. This is why the plantations had lots of slaves to work there in the hot humid south.
Today the same amount of work gets done in less time with much less people, and machines which are not fed in the winter, doing the work.
Same reason you see very few draft horses today.
