GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) There is a new battle of BBQ and this one deals with which style is healthiest.
Insurance company Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) took a look.
A post compared the Eastern style to the Western style.
The Eastern style comes out on top when it comes to being healthier.
BCBSNC says it is because the Western take on BBQ requires a bit more attention and more flavorings meaning more fat and sodium.
It tipped the scales to the East too because the whole pig is used and not just dark meat on the pork shoulder.
BCBSNC says pick the Eastern style for your heart and cholesterol health.
I beg to differ. It is well known fact that Kansas City is the superior BBQ.
At least we agree on this vinegar-mustard abomination this article is calling “barbecue”.

You should pay a visit to North Carolina to become enlightened.

Absolutely. What’s this “healthy BBQ” business? What does health have to do with finger-lickin’ good BBQ? It’s oxymoronic.

they’re different....I prefer the eastern NC. It’s also kind of what parts of Georgia call bbq also.

Dying a bit earlier may be a reasonable price to pay to avoid vinegar-centric Eastern NC barbecue.

anyone can slather a sauce and smother the meat....takes more skill and finesse to cook it eastern style.
And while eastern is “better” for you...it’s not a health food by any means...so you kinda struck out there.
The Eastern NC folks should be offended that they are having to subsidize the insurance rates of the unhealthy Lexington style BBQ eaters.
