A bit of trivia... buffalo hunters of that period favored a bullet lube of 50% beeswax and 50% sperm whale oil.
You had to kill the whales before you could kill the buffalo.
Not sure about buffalo hunters, but the bullet lube used by both the Union army and the Confederate army during the Civil War was a combination of bees wax and beef tallow. Bees wax being the main ingredient.
