SAN FRANCISCO — Legendary San Francisco stripper Carol Doda, whose splashy act helped introduce topless entertainment to the city more than 50 years ago, died at age 78.
Doda died Monday in the city from complications of kidney failure, friend Ron Minolla disclosed Wednesday.

She was HUgh in her day.
She used to do a TV station announcement in the early 1970s, which went something like this: “You are watching San Jose KGSC, the perfect 36!” (said in a rather breathless voice).
RIP, Carol.
Pioneering Stripper?
Condolences to family and friends of Carol Doda.
She was a good girl who just started to turn her life around...one dollar bill at a time.
Looking at the photo, very HUgh.
I had forgotten all about her until I read this. RIP
Gee, isn't this the type of person that is excoriated by the left as the source of problems in our country?
Unless they are the poor, disadvantaged from another country.
No way!? Was that her? I was stationed at Moffett Field and remember that. Very cool. Indeed,RIP.
In 1972, my parents, my sister and myself visited California for the very first time.
While walking down a street in San Francisco one night, I saw a guy standing in front of a theater shouting to people walking by, “Carol Doda is going to do her act in ten minutes! Come in and see Carol do her thing!” or words to that effect.
We did not go in (unfortunately).
I forgot about Carol....when did women get breasts anyway?
She’d never have made it today. I imagine since the consent laws passed for colleges, consent forms for strip joints cant be far behind.
“I’m going to take off my shirt now! Does everyone consent to seeing my bra? If so please sign on the line 12 below, I will be around shortly with a notary. Please have $25 ready. If you do not consent to seeing my bra, please put on your OSHA approved welding helmets and flip the shield down now.”
Can’t imagine a lot of customers. Everyone would be broke by the time she got naked.
"You were working as a waitress in a cocktail bar...."
IIRC, her primary claim to fame was silicone breasts. Very novel for that time. Now? Mundane.
Ann Corio was a stripper and burlesque star in the fifties and sixties. I think all she peeled off was her gloves. But she did it very well.
Somewhat off topic..In 1963, I was going on a campus visit to Johns Hopkins, and drove down from NY with my parents for a weekend tour. Back then Balitmore was a real dump..that was before they’d renovated the harbor area, and Hopkins was in a really lousy area. So just outside the the main entrance to the campus is this big old 1920’s movie theater...which was then a burlesque theater, and the marque says “BUSTY RUSSELL AND HER NIFTY 50’S” and there’s a banner..easily 30 feet tall, hanging down with her picture on it.
Fifty years ago I caught her act in San Francisco. Quite daring for the time, but NOTHING like the porn dancing you see Mylie Cyrus doing on TV in your living room these days.
