NEW YORK: Donald Trump's appearance as guest host of "Saturday Night Live" helped the TV comedy sketch show earn its highest viewership ratings since 2012, the NBC television network said on Sunday.

The show, which came under fire from Latino groups for inviting the blunt-spoken Republican presidential frontrunner to host, garnered a 6.6 rating in the 56 U.S. markets measured by Nielsen Media Research, NBC said in a statement.

The Trump show was the highest rating for SNL since Jan. 7, 2012, when an episode hosted by retired basketball star Charles Barkley pulled in a 7.0 rating, said the Comcast Corp.-owned network.

Saturday's rating was about 50 percent higher than the season premiere on Oct. 3 when Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton made a cameo appearance, according to CNNMoney.com.

Not quite a new record, but good.

Just a Trump bump.

I think the ratings were a lot higher. A lot of people probably went to bars to see the show. Also, many were in NYC hotel rooms Saturday night. Not sure if they count those towards the ratings.

As well, many people "time shift" and they record and watch the show at a more reasonable time. Not sure if those are counted.

Lastly, SNL has a free mobile app for tablets and phones in which you can see most of the skits (as well as many from years past) on your device. Since they came out with that, that's how I see most of it.

Used to be a time in our culture where a TV show was a happening and you had to be in front of your set at a particular time and on a particular channel, or you missed out on it. I remember back in the 1980s when they had the finale of a show whose name I can't remember. What I do remember is that the streets of Boston were literally empty, as everybody was home watching that show. I think it was "Cheers" or "M.A.S.H." - I can't remember.

Not the case any longer. If you want to watch a TV show, most of them are available on Netflix or Hulu on demand.

Eventually virtually everything ever put to film or broadcast will be available on demand. Including footage from security cameras. So someday, I will be able to go back in time and see myself waiting in line at a Dunkin Donuts walking down the street someplace.

I agree with your observations, completely.

Those are so true. In the last three years, it has really started to move.

Now, it seems everyone is connected in real time. Everyone.

I hope U.S. companies take note of this next time they consider bowing to boycott threats from the left. They can even save some money by not contributing to gay or transgender causes.

An open message to illegals, to so called refugees and other assorted scum freeloading off the Citizens of the United States of America.

Move while you still can, get the hell out of our country! And don't even think of voting!

Trump is the only reason SNL ratings moved upward.

SNL definitely hurt itself ... the writing was absolutely terrible for this show.

Trump was the reason the viewership was huge ... but the show was so bad that I couldn't watch the whole thing.

I wonder if the libtard writers did not want to make a great show out of fear it would make Trump look good. So they offered mediocre stuff.

They sure didn't encourage any viewers to tune in next week.

Did they count the people who watched online? And how do they know how many people watch each televison set or computer?
