League Suspends Referees After Miami-Duke Game
NBC Miami ^

No no. Not from a few years ago, and I heartily admit that I can’t remember the game. However, was the knee down issue “making it up” for the five pass interference calls that shouldn’t have been made? I don’t know. I’m jaded by the NCAA as a former student-athlete so I trust nobody that answers to them, refs included.

Looking at the video it’s not so easy to tell, even with pausing. What would be the applicable rules?

His knee was down, with the ball in his hand. End of play, end of game.

"The list of errors the ACC acknowledged:

* Replay official Andrew Panucci should have ruled Miami back Mark Walton was down before releasing the ball on one of the laterals. If the proper call had been made, the game would have ended in a Duke victory."

One of my friends is an official on one of the ACC Crews. Each crew has the same men and are graded on efficiency and correct calls. My friend’s crew gets rewarded almost every year with a bowl job. Just as there is in any profession, there are major screw ups working. Unfortunately, he states that he’ll never get upgraded to the NFL because they only hire affirmative action and former NFL players to officiate.

With all the cameras and replays used these days for reviews, etc., one wonders how something so obvious could be allowed to change the outcome of the game. I noted the announcers for the pro games were commenting on not wanting to get down on the refs, but the cameras made many of their mistakes obvious. Seems like the solution is to either get rid of most of the cameras or review every “iffy” play to ensure they got it right and to treat it like any other review play to change the call as necessary.

Yes, and I was also watching the game live.
The ball doesn’t start to get tossed backwards until after Walton’s knee was down.
The ball is in his hand when the knee is down. Game should have ended on that, replay official missed it, so the League suspended him for two games (along with the rest of the crew for additional mistakes).

...

I disagree. The indisputable video evidence required by the rules isn’t there to overturn the on field call.

The League, and practically every non-UM fan, disagree. The call was so obvious the ACC suspended the officials responsible for two games.

Look at it another way:
If you were wondering if that guy fumbled the ball, would you say it was not in his hand when his knee was down from that pic?

Football organizations such as the ACC aren’t always right. I can see the video myself, and see that the evidence isn’t indisputable as required by the rules.

And besides, the ACC is throwing the kitchen sink at these guys, rather than any one call. Apparently UM wasn’t happy with them either on other calls that favored Duke. From what I’ve read they were on UM’s list of referees they didn’t want officiating the game.

So do you think the ball isn't in his hand in that picture, or that his knee isn't on the ground?

I made the point that video is not a proper use of that.

You also confused NFL pass interference with college pass interference, because I bet that’s what you’re talking about. Probably forgotten that Miami is always, always, among the most penalized teams in all of college FB.

And conveniently forgot that Duke was robbed of likely touchdown in first quarter, on that totally absurd phantom fumble, long after the pass receivers butt had been on the ground.

Interesting point, and if it was, it was a really bad career move. Something else: in your experience, you know that ref human nature indicates they are hesitant to keep calling the same thing over and over...and players know that and will push that....that's what Miami's DBs, who pride themselves on pushing the envelope anyway...were doing. The key in college is do you turn your head to see the pass. They never did, with one exception, but in that one the contact was beyond dispute.

He’s definitely making a throwing motion as he goes down. Video also shows that the on field official had an excellent view of the play. Just as in baseball the tie goes to the runner, football replay gives the tie to the on field call. I could go either way based on the video. It’s very difficult to tell when the ball is first released and whether the force of the tackle could have caused his hand to make further contact with the ball after the release.

Here is a nifty site that lets you view the video frame by frame.

so what..........knee down, ball in possession, DONE, end of play. Just like if a quarterback gets knocked to a knee while he's throwing....DONE, end of play.

You're obviously just a contrarian today.

One of my friends is an official on one of the ACC Crews.

I'd be interested to hear his take on this....and I know it's RARE RARE for a league to throw their officials under the bus....even when refs deserve it, the conferences, including the NFL, circles the wagon and come up with all kinds of tortured logic to try and justify obviously bad calls.

The ACC obviously thought there was no excuse for that line judge to miss the knee down....right in front of him....and no excuse to miss 2 or 3 illegal blocks.....and no excuse for the replay official to take this long and still get it wrong, which he did in the first quarter too on a phony Duke fumble as they were about to score. I sense anger in Swofford's comments, and embarrassment. I don't think Swofford believes that bull about the officials conferring on that other flag either. I don't. That's CYA...only they didn't get it covered very well.

It's the damndest thing since that Big East official gave Michigan the first down against SC when there was clearly an inch or two between the ball and the marker...in a bowl game. TRIVIA: that's what led to that historic hit by Clowney knocking the guys helmet off. It was the very next play. Only what happened in Duke Miami was far more devastating. 4 mistakes, on one play, the last play, and all four mistakes favor one team?

Right, and you’re leaving out most of what I said. There must be a reason for that.

you’re just ignoring most of the salient facts....anybody who knows ANYTHING about football knows that leagues ALWAYS rally around their refs and defend them......unless it’s just so friggin obvious.

And yet, it’s not obvious to who? TO YOU.

No. I’m ignoring you because you’re ignoring the applicable rules. You specialize in attacking people, not only on this thread but others.

For the others who do care, the applicable rules concerning possession and replay can be found here:

So answer me this (you can’t) - what possible reason would the ACC office have to act so swiftly, even angrily, to these officials??????

Leagues almost always rally around their refs, almost always. And no one needs Miami to return to greatness as badly as the ACC does. So why then? Why are you so much smarter than they are?????
