All those movies you mention were good, but Lolita was the only one not as good nor better than the book.

I think the most faithful book to movie I’ve ever seen
was Catch-22. Having read the book many times, I took
the wife to the Atlanta red-carpet first showing of the
flick. As she sat beside me in the theater, I mouthed
the words of the actors as they were saying them. Joseph
Heller’s dialogues were too good to improve upon, so they
were lifted word for word into the movie.
