According to my Chapman’s Piloting text, wind force is...
P= K V(square). K= .004, V velocity in mph, P= lbs/ sq. ft.
Velocity sq x .004 = wind force in lb / sq ft.
( over 100 mph K= .005)

At 75 mph...22.5 lb/ sq ft.....100 mph... 50 lb/ sq ft

Should be able to get a rough estimate from that.

Your local farm store should have exactly what you need.

TSC, Farm&Ranch, etc.

No... They were fresh out of stock at my local Tractor Supply.

I am presently trying farmersonly.com...

Wish me luck!

I'd be more concerned with the lift created by a rounded top....

Haven't read any stories about such happening and wouldn't worry too much. Turbulence from the tow vehicle should keep it from developing a steady lift force of air and the combined weights is likely enough to keep it on the ground. Common sense dictates slower speeds in really windy weather. Pack the front of it heavy and put some gold bullion in the back of the tow vehicle.....

Is that frontal force, assuming still air (no turbulence?)

After reading all the comments, I’m inclined to think that true “lift” will be small, and any effect of air being “squeezed” between the bottom of the camper and the road will be modest...

I would note upon reflection, regarding lift, that the campers shaped most like some sort of airfoil are the Airstreams and the teardrop shaped jobs, and I’ve never heard of one going airborne simply due to speed out on the highway.

I can’t prove it to you but no....it won’t. I’ve towed them up to 80 and more..

The turbulence behind the tow vehicle should keep it down. But if you have worries, get a drop attachment for your hitch.

The formula was designed for sailing, boating, no objects in front of the sail, boats causing turbulence.
I do know I’ve seen pickup trucks w/ a refrigerator standing up in the bed with only the upper portion above the cab being blown out at 45+ mph.
YMMV.
Err on the safe side, tie everything down securely.

Appearance? Yeah, “that too”: The pop-up DOES look a little stupid with even a 1 deg. tilt.

I like to put “air shocks” on vehicles that I tow with. Once you get things close with the right sized adapter you can get your "rig" leveled perfectly with one of those little portable 12v compressors.

http://www.amazon.com/Monroe-MA759-Max-Air-Shock-Absorber/dp/B000C53XC0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1445614444&sr=8-3&keywords=air+shocks

I have never used the Monroes in the link... I just wanted to show you an example. I like the look when everything is level and to me it feels like everything drives better. Other people use airbags and they can level up a trailer with more tongue weight, but the shocks are easier to install and have had enough capacity for us. We used a weight distributing hitch with a sway bar when towing our most recent camp trailer which we towed behind our Aerostar and our then our Astrovan. It weighed 4000 lbs empty and had quite a bit of tongue weight but with the weight distributing hitch and air shocks we got it to ride level.

We recently sold our old 3/4 ton Dodge pickup which we occasionally used to tow our trailers but both the Ford Aerostar van and Chevy Astrovan have rear wheel drive based chassis and are capable of towing 5000 lbs stock. The 3/4 ton pickup had some obvious advantages but the two vans literally got over 50% better gas mileage and with auxiliary transmission coolers installed we never had any difficulties despite living in the foothills of the Cascade mountains.

You really should consider adding an auxiliary transmission cooler to your Subaru... they are less than $100 and can save you a lot of expensive repairs. Here is a link to the one I added to our Astrovan. You could probably use a smaller cheaper one in your Subaru.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CIGE9G?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

I learned about the importance of auxiliary transmission coolers from my dad. He wrecked the transmission in his Suburban towing a rented trailer full of metal roofing home from a neighboring state many years ago.

My dad had a tent trailer when I was growing up 50 years ago. Our family loved it. My dad used to drag that little trailer up some hellacious logging roads behind his old sedans. We didn't use one a pickup for towing our trailers back then because the six of us couldn't fit into one. I think that you are going to have a lot of fun.

What do you freeze your blocks in? Most anything I’ve tried cracks after one or 2 uses.

It will crack after a few uses if it’s plastic. The best thing are the large water containers from grocery store - the key to long lasting cooling is least surface area. Also know that using plastic container will cost you a few degrees of coolness vs direct airflow on ice. Milk jugs last about half as long as the big waters you can find at the grocery store. An advantage of purchasing these is that they are usually cheaper (bulk product) and as the water melts you can drink it. You can then use it one more time, but remember to not fill it all the way up because too much expansion will weaken the container.

Good luck and happy cold beverages!

Heh - yes, a lot of the stuff we see beside the road around here, that is not ordinary litter, are objects blown out of the rear of open bed pickup trucks and such.

Not nearly as heavy, but quite spectacular, was the time I saw a small dump truck full of empty aluminum cans encounter the air “gust” from a large delivery truck going the other direction, on a 2 lane highway. A goodly % of the cans literally “fountained” into the air about, I’d say 60 ft., making a big shimmery plume that then rained back down to Earth. It was a nice sunny day, so the effect was actually quite pretty. I got slowed down to about 5 mph before I got up to all the scattered cans. The dump truck driver was getting out of his cab, with the darndest expression on his face. I can’t blame him - I’ll bet picking up those cans took him the rest of the day, if he had to do it himself.

Single axle, small two horse. When we needed a big trailer we always had things right. If we had a short haul with one or two horses we thought we could get by, that’s when we would blow tires.
