Aah, so in Europe, they call moose -- elk.

I suppose that makes sense. I'd been told that before (but obviously had forgotten).

And yes, the word wapiti applies to North American 'elk' and is from native American dialect.

Shawnee, I think. Possibly overlapping with Cree.
