I have streamed some movies to my laptop but would need an internet capable TV or Blue Ray or game console or a device like Amazon Fire TV in order to stream to the TV.

I have a MacBook Pro 15" about 5 years old. I have a 5 meter cord that takes the external video output from the Mac and connects to my 32" TV via HDMI. I use a separate audio feed since it does not provide that on the Mac output. I was just watching "BlackList" on Netflix here in my Bedroom office.

Newer Macs (and I suppose other Windoze types) provide direct HDMI, YMMV!

DVI to HDMI

Yes I know I can connect my laptop to my HDTV via a HDMI cable. But since I live alone and my laptop has a 17” high resolution - high def screen and I have a laptop sound bar that gives me near stereo sound, even better than my TV’s sound since I don’t have a surround sound system, I just haven’t bothered cabling my laptop to my TV. That and sometimes, being an insomniac, I like watching movies very late at night and since I live in an apartment and don’t want to disturb my neighbors, watching, streaming movies to my laptop is a good option.

That and when I first moved to my apartment five years ago, my old tube TV went on the fritz – the color tube went out and everything was either purple or green, but otherwise it worked just fine. But being the cheapskate I am, and considering that most of what I watch on TV is news, I just turned off the color setting on my TV to B&W and watched TV in B&W for about 2 ½ years until I finally broke down and bought a new flat screen HD TV.

Or get an Apple TV and just stream wirelessly from your laptop or ipad with Airplay.
