Astros advance, end Yankees' season

NEW YORK (AP) -- A year ago, no one could've pictured this. Yet here they were, Dallas Keuchel and the Houston Astros, soaking in champagne, merrily posing for a victory shot on the mound at Yankee Stadium.

After all that losing, this was one October win to remember.

Pitching on three days' rest for the first time in his career, Keuchel baffled New York for six innings of three-hit ball. Colby Rasmus and Carlos Gomez homered, and the Astros beat the Yankees 3-0 Tuesday night in the American League wild-card game.

"Nobody really gave us anything at the start of the year. And I don't think anybody gave us a shot at the end of the year," said Keuchel, the AL's only 20-game winner.

The orange-clad Astros, who secured their spot in this winner-take-all game on the last day of the regular season, advanced to the Division Series against the defending AL champion Royals starting Thursday night in Kansas City.

lol ... there was a time when I could recite the scores for all the games from the previous evening ... who was in first in each division, by how many games ... and who were the top three leaders for the batting title.

Apparently I have lost a little interest as life has progressed.

As a lifelong Yankee fan, I had serious doubts about us winning that game last night.

The Yankees run scoring model is “Hit a HR”. Keuchel is left-handed (always a positive when pitching at Yankee Stadium) and he gives up very, very few HR. Tanaka, when he gets hit, tends to give up HR. The Astros are a HR hitting team. They hit their HR, the Yankees didn’t.

It was a bad matchup for us from the outset given that Plan A is hit HR
Plan B is “see Plan A”.
Plan C is “There is no Plan C”

The Yankees were actually playing well and were ahead of Toronto in early August, but Toronto made some key trade-deadline moves and got the Yankees started on their decline with a three-game sweep in the second week in August. The Yankees never recovered from that, and it was obvious by mid-September that they had really been playing over their heads for most of the season.

In the regular season the Yankees were 10-16 after Labor Day, which is never a good sign heading into the playoffs.

Greenie brought up the idea of shortening the regular season if they had a best-of-three playoff for the wild card teams, but Golic mentioned that that could mean some teams sitting a week idle, which they don't like to do.

Going into November wouldn't be such a problem if only the teams from the Sun Belt were getting to the World Series.

And somewhere, someone said, “Enter ye through the narrow gate...”

So, 90+ % of the country despises the most successful franchise in the history of sports. Sounds like envy more than anything else.

It would also mean teams losing revenue for the games taken out of the schedule, which I don't see the owners standing for.

Going into November wouldn't be such a problem if only the teams from the Sun Belt were getting to the World Series.

I don't imagine a Brewers vs. Tigers Series would be a whole lot of fun.

As a 50 year Astros fan, I had no doubt that Kuechel would be a gamer and bulldog, and would put the Yanks away. On to KC!!!!!!!!

Now if the Padres could fashion a record to match the Yankees of the 1949 to 1964 era, half the World Series games would be in a warm climate at least.

Yankees had no offense

Another fan minimizing the talents of this year's probable AL Cy Young winner. Any team with Gardner, Beltran and AROD is going to have an adequate offense.. Just admit Kurchel was on his game, as he has been 95% of the year.

Enjoy this little bit of humor:

fact
fakt
noun
a thing that is indisputably the case.
Ex. The fact is the New York Yankees have won more championships than any other sports franchise.

One more fact: The Yankees will be back! The Astros? Not enough data with which to make an educated guess.

You seriously need to lighten up a bit when someone pokes fun at your team, dude. Trust me on that … I’m a Rangers and Cowboys fan.

We couldn’t touch him all 3 starts he had against us...Astros were the better team last night.

That said, Yankees need to turn over some of the dirt in their lineup.

when did the Houston Astros move to the AL?

COB Bud Selig and his criminal enterprise extorted the team sale to a new owner, by adding a condition to moving to the other league as part of that agreement. .

This in turn benefited Selig's team the Brewers. Selig should have done jail time for this as far as I am concerned.

No. I won’t lighten up. And I’m going to hold my breath until you apologize ;>}

You must realize, though, that the map you showed represents the facts on the ground (mostly the result of the Steinbrenner years of 1975-1990). And when you are an admitted Yankees fan and your team loses, you DO deal with all the irrational ravings of those who revel in your having joined them in the agony of defeat (an agony that they’ve had to taste a whole lot more than we Yankee fans have, I might add!)

No, more of dislike of their arrogance.

LOL!

We watched the game, last night. Great game....enjoyed the fact that the Astros beat the Yankees, in Yankee Stadium.

Noticed something....maybe we missed it...didn’t see ONE Yankee come over to congratulate the ‘Stros. We all agreed, that if the tables had been turned...regardless of whose field the game was played on...(at least some) Astros players would’ve walked over to congratulate the Yanks.

I’m no Yankees fan, but a one game playoff is absurd. Should go to 2 out of 3 for this round.
