There are reports that El Faro lit off its EPIRB, but it went silent after only a few minutes.

There should have been some EPIRBs in “float-free” mounts, outside.

But if the ship rolled and sank, they might have all gone down with her.

An EPIRB pinger can’t transmit through deep ocean water.
