Starbucks to switch to 100 percent cage-free eggs by 2020

Starbucks will switch to using only eggs laid by cage-free chickens at its North American locations within five years, the company told Reuters on Thursday.

The company said it has been steadily working on making the switch since it began buying cage-free eggs in 2008.

The pledge follows similar moves by McDonald's Corp, Burger King Corp and food services company Sodexo SA. It is happening as North American egg suppliers are slowly starting to rebuild flocks after the worst bird flu outbreak in U.S. history.

Don’t chickens naturally collect themselves in small cubbyholes?

...and it is going to take until 2020 to finalize the switch? Why does it take that long?

This won’t affect me because I don’t drink eggs in my coffee.

Have you ever had an egg from a free range bird? There is a big different.

Finding enough "free range" eggs is probably the reason, especially since bigger concerns like Mickey Ds is, or will be, going in that direction as well.

What’s the big deal about “cage free eggs”?

The cartons keep them from rolling just fine....

There was a reason why they began putting chicken in cages. First, trying to get good egg production by having the kids (big families) run around every morning through the pasture trying to find the egg nests didn't do well for commercial production. Second, trying to keep track of the hens was a pain. Third, trying to keep the brood healthy was not possible. And, there are more reason.

Not the least of which is that with a growing population there is no way to supply the eggs needed by using subsistent agricultural practices.

For anyone's information, eggs laid out side of cages are dirty, have chicken poop on them, or other not so nice compounds, as well.

This cage free crap is doing more to cut eggs out of Americans diets more than the phony baloney cholesterol scares ever did. At almost $5 a dozen eggs it’s a joke. I say we find the crap that vegans eat and raise the price to moon and treat the peta members the same way they treat all those pets they purport to save.

Starbucks? Meh! Gave them up years ago when the CEO told pro-traditional marriage shareholders to ‘sell their shares’ if they didn't like supporting sodomy.

I have since found much better tasting coffee elsewhere. It wasn't difficult. The stale day old coffee at your local gas station convenient store is cheaper and tastes the same or better.
