I see them up here often in some years. As big as some of them are they can, and do, move about quietly when they want. Bear wise, You should not be outside working, in non hibernation months, in any condition other than full alert and sufficiently armed. That is just the way it is up here.

If you live in an area where bears also live, as I do, the first rule is to not have any type of food close by that would attract a bear. Once they discover a treat in your yard they come back looking for more.

My sister in law has a summer house near San Ignacious MT. She is altogether too relaxed about bears in her yard. She finally put up a wrought iron fence but she still has to get our of her car to open and close the gate.
She has reported a lot of bears, black and grizzly in her immediate area the last month.
