What To Do With 78RPM Records?
10/1/15 | Originalbuckeye

Does anyone have any ideas what can be done with old 78 rpm records? It seems such a shame to throw them out as some are in pretty good shape. I just cannot keep them anymore.

Lots of collectors and with modern software they can clean up surface noise etc...

I'd love to have that done to some of my old LPs. A few of them aren't available in CD or any digital format.

I have seen a couple of the ‘sets’ on eBay that I have. They aren’t selling for much. It’s so sad.

Save them. Those were the first records that I had. Little Richard, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, etc. I was lucky to have older brothers. I’ll bet that they’re worth some money. But, don’t sell them, just hold onto them. It’ll just get better.

I actually think I have read about modern laser ‘needle’ that can read the grooves off of old vinyl and play it back with no friction wear on the old vinyl surface

If there is not such a thing I can invent one and program the software to do it...

Little Richard, Howlin Wolf, Chuck Berry, etc. I was lucky to have older brothers.

Those were 33’s and 45’s not 78’s

Check around. Some are much sought after by collectors.

I would bury them. In several hundred years they will be dug up and the story will be posted by SunkenCiv XII on Free Republic 2525.

No, they weren't. They were singles on 78. When I was a kid, they went through four speeds. They had a 16 RPM for like books and long dialogue. They originally had singles on 78 RPM. Then they shifted to 45 RPM for singles for decades, probably. And, they had 33 just for what they called LP, long play (albums). In fact, I found one for you. And, then there's "78, Little Richard" on Google images.

If you have them, save them.

Go to www.old78s.com. Joe Lauro did the appraisals for large donations of 78s to Syracuse University, George Washington University, and other institutions. He also buys certain records, but not others.

I recently saw on either Syracuse TV or PBS a records recycling company that makes craft and art objects from donated records. I’ll try to find that reference.

Some are valuable to collectors. I have one that is special, its a 78 by Patsy Montana, I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart, that was given to me by her daughter out of Patsy's estate. At least I got a letter of provenance with it that is fixed to the back of the frame.
