Some people say "A race advanced enough to have mastered interstellar travel, would be mature enough to have outgrown any lust for conquest. They would be benevolent to any intelligence they come across".

Two counter-examples:

(1) We are sufficiently more technologically advanced than Socrates, that we would seem as gods to him. Are individual humans really more intellectually and socially advanced than the Greeks of his day?

(2) Just because you have ACCESS to technology, does not mean YOU are intellectually or socially advanced. For example, think of star-traveling equivalents of Somali pirates.
