Of Course This Angry Note To A Volkswagen TDI Owner Is From Portland

Got a note from a 'sympathetic and concerned' citizen today. @dontmovetoportlandoregon #thistownneedsanenema #pdxnow

Full disclosure, I have no clue if this is legit or not. But I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it turned out to be real, because Portland.

To the residents of the People’s Republic: if you’re out and about and you see this thing on cars, let us know.

Dieselgate, everybody!

Ya. We used to watch it until it got weird. ;)

Funny actors and perfect show for making fun of hippies.

Ya, but a passenger car? A bug?

Also, it is more efficient and so you can get better mileage (if I remember my college Thermo class correctly).

ANY diesel car/truck/boat will be running for 3-4 years after the last gasoline car is dead.

That is reason enough to get one, especially at fire-sale prices.

One of the BEST CAR VALUES I have ever driven.
Love that low end umpf of vdubs, even 1.8 Golfs could be a fun car.
But the diesels are a breed apart. Like little tanks, with the torque to hem your dress, and fabulous gas mileage to boot. Use some Kerosene in a pinch (”Artic” Diesel).

If the vehicle “passes” the test, what’s the issue?
I’ve had to adjust throttle bodies, injectors air filter boxes etc to meet the emissins tests on occasion.
What’s the diff?
If VW is smart enough to write code that makes the vehicle pass the test, I don’t see the issue.

My TDI gets an honest 40 mpg combined. I’d find it incredible if it polluted more than my Suburban which gets 12 mpg. I’d be really annoyed to get this note.

Incidentally, they’re right about VW, but as somebody below pointed out GM and several other big companies were also in bed with the Nazis. See link. “Hitler’s American Business Partners.”

Notice they only cared about the NAZI connection when it turned out their cars polluted.

Whoever wrote that may have added insult to injury. Those cars might not pass emissions tests where required (California, Denver, etc.).

Ironically, the term ‘Nazi’ is lost on the person who left the note.

It doesn’t. It might be higher in some aspects but overall less fuel burned pollutes less especially since carbon dioxide is now a pollutant.

The code was written to sense when the car was being tested and lower the emissions just for the test. When the test was passed the software would make things normal again. I like it...but it is illegal.

True confessions. When I change my TDI’s oil, I pour about a quart into the tank until the used oil is all gone. You’d think that would make it smoke, or run dirty, but it doesn’t. The oil costs $10/ liter. I won’t waste it.

I have a diesel not made by VW.I love it for 100 different reasons, one of which is it gets 53mpg on the Interstate.I will resist any efforts that the watermelons at the EPA make to tamper with my car causing changes in its performance or efficiency.

I don't give a rat's hindquarters what gasses my diesel emits!

“Once these TDI’s have the performance dialed back to meet emissions I wonder if one could get a hold of the original program that VW used.

Cheap, neutered TDI + original programming + tuner shop = win.”

The “Tuner” aftermarket business has been selling equipment and services, to alter performance on all cars and trucks.

The greatest incremental improvements come on turbocharged engines. Hence a thriving sub-industry, e.g. “remapped” engine software.

They cater best to vehicles with many on the road. VW-Audi turbocharged gasoline engines for example. Also BMW, Volvo, etc. which have also been using small displacement turbo engines.

The TDI is a relatively small market in the US, by comparison BUT it has already got tuners, who alter the software.

Note there are fewer than 500,000 vehicles impacted by this in the US, but 11 million worldwide.

There will be folks that can change your TDI back to factory OR BETTER, if forced by government to detune it for emissions.

An example is APR,right here.
