Carmel mission vandalized after Junipero Serra’s canonization

Four days after Pope Francis proclaimed Junipero Serra a saint, vandals defaced the grounds of Mission San Carlos in Carmel where the newly canonized Franciscan friar, and founding father of modern California, is buried.

At some point overnight Saturday, one or more vandals scaled the wall surrounding the cemetery next to the mission and defaced the headstones and statues of Serra and other European settlers buried on the grounds, said Sgt. Luke Powell with the Carmel-by-the-Sea Police Department. Vandals also sloshed paint on the church’s outside doors.

Officials with the mission posted eight photos of the vandalism on Facebook early Sunday, which show white, green and red paint splattered on the site’s memorials.

A statue of Serra was toppled over with green and white paint poured across the face and chest. A chunk of stone had the words “saint of genocide” scrawled on it.

“The Mission needs volunteers and skilled professionals to volunteer with the cleanup today,” officials wrote in the post. “If you can help please come down and offer your assistance. The way to healing is peace and service.”

Police were investigating the incident as a hate crime.

“There appears to be a correlation between the canonization and this criminal act,” Powell said. “Only the gravestones of European settlers were defaced versus the Native American ones.”

This is a really significant act of vandalism both symbolically and materially. Major damage has been done to a significant California historical landmark and a major religious center of worship for Catholics and as a non Catholic who has been there several times for those of other denominations. This vandalism including defacement of tombstones is far bigger than anything done before excepting the complete dismantling of the UDC memorial (a large one) in a Seattle cemetery about a decade ago. This is a significant and ominous development.

“white, green and red paint splattered on the site’s memorials.”

Sounds like the Mexican flag.

I can imagine other missions being defaced & vandalized, but somehow I wouldn’t think Carmel.

Wouldn't surprise me any.

Gringos seem to have this misconception that all hispanics are god fearing catholics. Nothing could be further from the truth. Most of the population of mexico and central/south america are a few generations removed from head-chopping indios, european socialists, and rain forest dwellers killing other tribes over hunting grounds.

Father Serra is buried at Carmel. Though he walked all the way to Mexico City from Monterey to get a 'bill to rights' to protect the natives from the Spanish Commandante, some of their descendants are haters.

Carmel is where Saint Junipero Serra is buried! This is a real tragedy.

When I was in college I did research on Father Serra. When I say research I do not mean I googled him. I read primary-sourced information and at no time did I ever find anything to suggest that he tried to hurt the Indians in any way.

This was a young man who decided that he wanted to be a missionary when he had the opportunity to stay in Spain and be a professor.

He traveled to all the missions regularly to make sure they were operating well and that the Indians were being treated well.

His biggest headache was having to run interference with soldiers who wanted to do their own will and not comply with the rules established by Spain and the Franciscan order as to how the natives should be treated.

This was a man who when he heard that George Washington and his soldiers were suffering at Valley Forge he got up a collection of money and sent it to Washington.

The people who did the defacing are idiots.

Actually, the climate in Carmel is similar to Majorca, Spain where he was from. It felt like home to him.

What’s criminal here is that once again, “law enforcement” failed even to think INSIDE the box! No one thought his grave might be a target? Ludicrous.

The Carmel Mission and grounds are quite beautiful. Evil stalks this world. What a shame. I hope they make short work of the restoration.

I believe the Indios in Santa Fe had the same problem, a power struggle between the secular authorities and the Church tore the Indians apart.
So they rebelled and threw the Spanish out, only to suffer at the hands of their enemies the Apaches and Comanches. The Spanish returned ten years later to a much diminished population of Indians who then looked upon the Spanish as protectors from the Apaches and Comanches.

You left out cannibalism.

My favorite image of Father Serra is of him as an old man, within a few years of his death, working with some native women cutting cloth for them to sew clothes for themselves.

One of the things he and the other priests had to do was to teach the women how to wear clothes because up until that time they only wore something around their waists which covered their loins.
