BERKELEY MAN FINDS $1,300 IN DOMINO'S DELIVERY BOX

A Berkeley man ordered a pizza and wings from Domino's and got more than that - a lot more -- when he found stacks of cash inside the delivery box.

"I ordered some pizzas and I thought I was going to have the day off. I was going to sit at home and enjoy my relaxation," Mike Vegas said.

This story starts with the ordinary. Vegas called up Domino's and ate just one slice before putting the rest in the fridge. It wasn't until several hours later that he noticed.

"My phone started blowing up and I wasn't looking at the random messages. I was at work so I wasn't answering," he said.

Those phone calls were from the delivery driver, who had been on his way to the bank with just one more delivery to make.

He put the cash in the wings box for safekeeping but made a big mistake.

"About 5 a.m., I got home from work and went to my refrigerator and pulled out what I thought was wings. It turned out to be 1,300 bucks," Vegas said.

That's right. Sitting in Vegas' fridge, in the wings box, was loads of cash.

"I think it's 666 here and 632 here, about $1,300 total," he said.

It's one of those moments you where you wonder what you would do.

"I wrote a Facebook post and of course there's a long list of people arguing you should keep it, you shouldn't keep it,you should keep it, you shouldn't keep it" he said. "I wanted to keep it, believe me. But I can't, I can't do that."

So ABC7 watched as he walked it in. "Thank you so much for this, honest people are hard to find these days," Domino's Pizza General Manager Zia Mumtaz said.

And it looks like karma might be a real thing. "Just to thank you, we're going to offer you free pizza for a whole year," Mumtaz said.

It's an offer Vegas plans to take the chain up on. "I'm going to have to start working out more, obviously," he joked.

Smart man.

Who knows who might have come looking for the money.

The article starts out saying this Mike Vegas was going to have the day off. Then a few hours later, they say he was at work.

Which is it?

Journalism sucks these days.

Nah, the cash was payment for the illegal drugs that were delivered...

Fairly common plot among tv show script writers. Usually the food is "to go", rather than delivery, but the principle's the same.

Oh, and in a Mira Sorvino flick.

Yeah, but it's PIZZA, so I thought I would give it the Italiano spin... I claim artistic license. ; )

He had the day off, not the night. Notice he got off at 5:00 AM.

Well, assuming he gets pizza once or twice per week, and a medium pizza is about ten bucks, to keep the math easy, we get somewhere between 520 to 1040 dollars.

Hmmm, a large reward in relation to the money returned...

Yes, he was going to have the day off and enjoy his relaxation, a turn of phrase I’ve never heard but which I like very much and intend to use from now on. I’ll probably end up at work too!
