How Steely Dan Created ‘Deacon Blues
Wall Street Journal ^ | Sept. 10, 2015 | MARC MYERS

As midlife-crisis songs go, Steely Dan’s “Deacon Blues” ranks among the most melodic and existential. Recorded for the album “Aja” in 1977, the song details the bored existence of a ground-down suburbanite and his romantic fantasy of life as a jazz saxophonist.

Written by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen in 1976, “Deacon Blues” was released in 1977 on Steely Dan’s album “Aja,” which in the fall reached No. 3 on Billboard’s album chart, where it remained for seven consecutive weeks. The song also was a hit single in early 1978. With Steely Dan appearing in New York at the Beacon Theatre from Oct. 6-17, Mr. Fagen, Mr. Becker, guitarist Larry Carlton and saxophonists Tom Scott and Pete Christlieb recalled the writing, arranging and recording of the cult classic. Edited from interviews:

Very good tune, very good band. I never bought one of their albums but my wife-to-be had some.

While the poor people sleepin’
With the shade on the light
While the poor people sleepin’
All the stars come out at night

Oh, every song on Aja is great, and Black Cow refers to the drink, they had a lot of booze references in their music. I just listened to Deacon Blues, and the sax at the end took me back to winter 1977, living in downtown Toledo. Spooky!

They call Alabama the Crimson Tide...

Since this thread is attracting the best and brightest music experts and at least mentions football, let me pose this to the wise and winners of the world. I'm woefully out of touch with what passes for pop culture nowadays, what is the meaning of the song used in the B1G [insert number here] Maps commercial? The group performing is Guards -- never heard of them and the song is titled "Silver Linings". I don't see a connection with the music and the B1G conference (or even football), although it's a catchy little ditty.

From their “Guitar Album” arranged by the great, Larry Carlton.

My fav track is “Don’t Take Me Alive”.

Here’s an interesting outtake version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8lgg_DeWO5U

Maybe they didn’t want to pay for a Beach Boys song.

Thank you for the kind words to all on the thread.

To answer your question... I don't know. I do well to keep up with the two teams I follow (University of Tulsa being the other) and their conferences, and I'm not familiar with the group you mention.

Patience, though, someone will come up with it. I'm not sure who's doing the college football ping list this year, or if anyone is now that we're talking about it.
