Windows 10
My Research | 9/2/2015 | Me

Before you install Microsoft Windows 10 you need to ask yourself one question. If they are giving the software away for free, how do they make back the money invested in development and sustainment?

“Apps” AFAIK is technically short for “applications”, and they were calling programs “applications” way back during Windows 3.1 IINM, even though the main window of that OS shell (MS-DOS was the actual OS) was dubbed “Program Manager”.

The Windows 10 freebie is on a one-year basis only. After a year you have to purchase it or it stops functioning. ;-)

I was being a bit satirical. BTW, I actually liked DOS.

I am running Win 10 on the PC I am writing this on...

So far, it’s much better than Win 7, and Win 8.1

I don’t know how they plan to capitalize it except to move everyone forward so that they can abandon support for the previous version(s) and have a new product in the market.

Win 8/8.1 was an epic disaster, and the PC manufacturers were selling new PC’s with Win7. So, penetration of Win 8/8.1 was being hampered. I suspect that some good will was partly the motivation, the other was the ability to close the book on Win 8/8.1

There is nothing like a Personal Computer where you get to control everything from the hardware gozintas and gozoutas on up through the data’s path to the screen. Even that Socialist Richard Stallman cherishes personal liberty.

My grandson says “Grandpa, how do they get the bacon off the pigs”......

Mink farmer talking to city woman about minks. When she asked how many pelts a year did he get off each animal, he paused and said, just one, more than that makes them nervous.

There are some ads in the games.

There are apps and add-ons that cost you.

MS will make plenty of money via Win10.

Plus, the free upgrade is only for a limited time.

Soon, to get the upgrade, you will have to pay.

Only genuine legal copies of 7/8/8.1 will get an activated upgrade to 10.

Others will get an unactivated upgrade to 10, and they will have to pay for a new key.

They make the money back by selling you to the world; everything about you that’s on or crosses your computer.

I’ll never put it on mine.

Yea sure, you betcha...........

from Forbes ——>...On multiple occasions this year Microsoft has come out and said it sees itself as a services company moving forward and that it views Windows long term as a subscription service, not a buy once platform as it has been up to now.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/06/17/windows-10-free-for-1-year-what-happens-next/

Hate to break the ‘free’ as in beer bubble, but....

Old FUD. MS has continously said the OS is free for the life of your product. They make money selling apps, having subscriptions to Office etc.
