However, there is hope on the horizon:
They already made Bond’s best friend in the CIA, Felix Leiter, into a black character (somehow it sounds strange to me that a black guy would be named “Felix”). Does he get to keep the job if Bond goes black as well?
Looking all the casting choices they’re suggesting for Bond, it sounds like Hollywood is hellbent on casting someone who is even LESS faithful to the source material than Daniel Craig. (Shades of how they managed to make an even LESS faithful Little Orphan Annie than the New Deal luvin’/sing along with FDR 1970s Broadway musical.)
Damn you, Hollywood. Please don’t force me to hope Craig stays on.
(BTW, why is it so big in Hollywood to keep turning white characters into black guys? Aren’t Hispanics the big demographic to pander to now? Blacks don’t even make up a big percentage of movie goers. Hollywood seem a bit behind the times)

It never particularly bothered me about Leiter being played by a Black actor. In Connery’s comeback, “Never Say Never Again”, Bernie Casey played Leiter, and did an excellent job as an equal to Bond (previous Leiters were generally played by desultory actors, with only Jack Lord being a stand-out in “Dr. No” and David Hedison in his two turns). I thought Casey was the best overall.
As for the notion of Idris Elba playing Bond, why not come up with an original film and character specially-tailored for him now that they can parlay into a 3 or 4 film series ? Is Hollyweird so completely bankrupt of new ideas that they’re trying to shoehorn a Black actor into the role of a White Scot secret agent ? It’s so ridiculous they might as well get Gabourey Sidibe to take over the Jason Bourne character.
Felix is kinda old school of name but back in the day I bet their were plenty of Black Americans named Felix, not even counting Black Hispanics, like boxer Felix Trinidad.
Even still, Felix Jones, (Former?) NFL running back, born 1987. Good name, better than “Trayvon”.
I would envision a Black guy named “Felix Lieter” as one of Fred Sanford’s poker buddies.
Whatever, Lieter’s an American and a supporting character, make him Black, fine.
But as you say, Bond canon is “Scottish Father, Swiss Mother”. So unless he’s the brother of Chef from South Park, he ain’t Black.

This is called “color-blind casting” by the way. Common in plays, I saw Lady MacBeth played by a Black woman, but plays are different, nothing wrong with giving non-White actors a chance with Shakespeare roles (all of which have been played by thousands of actors) other than “Othello”, Patrick Stewart once played a White Othello, everyone else was Black. That was a swell idea.
But James Bond? C’mon. How about a White “Shaft” then?

Why stop at fictional characters? How about next time they make a movie about Richard Nixon, he’s Chinese?
