Count Fleet. Highly regarded but injured after.

But he is the only one. It’s only in the last 30 years especially that horses’ careers have gone really soft. Definitely started in the ‘60s, as does everything going south.

American Pharoah makes 2nd start after taking Triple Crown in today's Travers at Saratoga.

The triple crown was not won in today's Travers at Saratoga.

See the difference?

If I were leading by 30 lengths I’d slow down too!

Not really.

Because if I had wrote it either of these ways,

American Pharoah makes 2nd start (after taking Triple Crown) in today’s Travers at Saratoga.

Or,

American Pharoah makes 2nd start, after taking Triple Crown, in today’s Travers at Saratoga,

it would mean “after taking Triple Crown” could be removed from the sentence and it would still make sense. But it wouldn’t make sense with it removed.

ie, American Pharoah makes 2nd start in today’s Travers at Saratoga

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has been beaten, losing to Keen Ice in the $1.6 million Travers Stakes before a stunned crowd Saturday at Saratoga Race Course.

American Pharoah came into the race as the overwhelming favorite but lost the lead entering the far turn and didn't have the energy to catch a charging Keen Ice on the homestretch.

The upset solidified Saratoga's reputation as the "Graveyard of Favorites." Only one of four Triple Crown winners has ridden in and won the Travers -- Whirlaway in 1941.

Keen Ice, trained by Dale Romans and ridden by Javier Castellano, won by three-quarters of a length. Castellano picked up his fifth career win in the Travers, and Keen Ice won for the second time in 11 career races.

The first Triple Crown winner in 37 years, American Pharoah had won eight straight races coming into the Travers, including the Haskell Invitational on Aug. 2. Three of the last four Crown winners failed to win their second race after the Belmont Stakes, including Secretariat in 1973 and Affirmed in 1978.

American Pharoah had not lost since his debut in August 2014.

Second place...but a darn good race none the less.

I was a little shocked when AP lost. Keen Ice coming from behind was a shocker. Even with the ups and downs of Frosted...I have always like the horse.

Espinoza said that Frosted bumped him. Frosted had AP on the rail...but I never detected a bump. AP never faltered or changed course. As good as he ran...it just wasn’t his best race.

On the bright side...the “crawl” said that no horse had ever won the Breeder’s Cup that had won the Travers. Should be a good race.

I’m a funny person I guess. Any horse that comes in in the money in these high caliber races...is a winner imho.

Not much of a horseracing enthusiast but if there has ever been a more beautiful creature in the world, I would like to see it.

I had to work all day yesterday (and this morning for that matter) so I missed the race and have been too busy to try to handicap it. Keen Ice ran a very nice race. It looks like frosted and APs early speed opened the door for the late runner, which is always fun to watch. This is APs first loss (2nd isn’t really a “loss”) since his debut race if I’m not mistaken. Thanks for the ping.

He’s about as visually perfect as a horse can be. He’s just ripped. I’ve tried to study his conformation for future reference. It should be interesting to see if Pioneer of the Nile can produce another. And another.

I read that the owners may retire him after this race.

I guess we’ll see.

Can't believe he paid a whopping $35 to win, given his late closing 2nd to AP in the recent Haskell (Aug 2).

Looks like AP is back to being entered in the Breeders, at least this week.

I truly hope he wins.
