People have always been stupid, but it wasn’t possible to publish every stupid incident in the country before. These days stupid sells—look at our politicians.

Back in the 70s, I just can't imagine my dad, his brothers, or his friends handling a rattlesnake like a toy and taking a "selfie." That kind of stupid, irresponsible, silly trivial nonsense just wasn't in their makeup.

I remember back in the early '60s when all of us kids heard that a local boy had captured a rattlesnake and gotten bitten by it. We all thought he was an idiot, and when I finally ran into him many years later, he admitted that it was a very stupid thing that he did.
