I'm surprised this sort of thing doesn't happen more often - when cars hit the wall, dozens of pieces of carbon fiber, tires, wings, etc., go flying, and - with the cars in close proximity - you'd think drivers would be hit by debris more often than they are.
I think eventually that open-wheel cars will go to some sort of enclosed cockpit, whether totally enclosed or some sort of cage.

I don’t follow racing so I didn’t know him but RIP. Lost my young -ish cousin a few weeks ago from a traumatic brain injury. Still hurting.

We had met him many times. Just an unbelievable tragedy.
He was definitely one of the good guys. He was known to tour childrens’ hospitals before races (Racing for Kids) and would spend lots of time talking with each one of the kids. Didn’t have to do it, he just did.
