A woman who was sentenced to death after she was wrongly convicted of killing her abusive husband has finally been set free after 15 years of incarceration, after the court re-examined her case and determined that there were some serious errors made during her trial.

Now 57, Michelle Byrom has spent more than a quarter of her life behind bars in Mississippi, awaiting her death for a crime she didn't commit. Even after her son confessed to murdering the man who abused him and his mother mercilessly, she continued to sit on death row.

Finally free again, Michelle recently spoke to Vanessa Golembewski at Refinery29 about what it was like to be imprisoned while innocent, condemning the judge who sentenced her and marveling at how much the world has changed since she was first locked up.

Sounds like Judge Thomas Gardner is a problem.

Definitely a one sided article. I would really like to know the other side of the story.

Agree. The exoneration was not really a finding of innocence or based on scientific proof, such as DNA. I was based on technical errors in the trial proceedings. That may mean she did not get a fair trial, but it does not mean she didn’t do the crime.

More importantly, was any prosecutor’s ego harmed by this release?

That judge ran a kangaroo court. It sounds like he should be impeached.

Let’s see.

The son confessed to a court-ordered psychiatrist, had gun residue on his hands, and led police to the murder weapon.

And this wasn’t introduced at trial.

Sounds like a lot more than just ‘technical errors’.

all judges are the problem.

if you want to see firsthand how petty dictators act in 3rd world countries, just visit a courtroom and watch how the judge acts to everyone else in that courtroom.

imperious doesn’t even begin to describe how most of these ambulance chasers act once they get the title of “judge”.

They probably the thought the son confessed to spare his mother. That kind of thing happens, usually parents for children though.

Plenty info there on various locations involved. Either you didn’t read the article or didn’t pay attention to what you were reading.

Her story is very similar to a lot of abused women. I knew a girl in Louisiana whose boyfriend beat her nearly to death with a fire extinguisher. I’ve known others or read their stories and it almost always sounds the exact same.

Beat the crap out of a woman, come back crying the next day and swear it won’t happen again, a few weeks later put her in the hospital. Once she gets fed up and leaves, he tracks her down and won’t let go, finally wears her down and gets her back, beats her some more. Many fell exactly the way she did, couldn’t leave him and move, he’d just find her to do it some more.

Those who do leave and manage to get away will dump a guy who would never hurt a woman for anything in the world, for the first piece of trash who treats her like crap. Been there done that, that’s why I started to study it. Girl I was trying to get together with suddenly wouldn’t answer the phone or the door, I found out through a mutual friend (who was helping us get together) she had met some jerk who treated her like a dog and let him move in a week later.I had been seeing her 3 months and barely got to the point I’d try to kiss her...I was really scared, been hurt too many times already, her too.

A month later he put her in the hospital. This was the 4th one, I started to look into it. This article is a bit one sided, but not the way you think. Both the men and women follow predictable patterns. The men are usually abused themselves as kids, take it out on their wives. They usually spend a year or so on verbal abuse...You’re stupid, can’t do anything right, etc. Gimme that I’ll do it myself you’re too stupid...

The women develop a sort of dependence for the abuse, they feel like they deserve it, and if they do get out of the relationship, will look for someone else who is the same. The men have a knack for finding women who are weak willed, with low self esteem, and will tolerate it.

When a woman fights back, judges often don’t see it as self defense, which it should be. Sometimes juries also. Having dealt with a verbally abusive father I know how terrified they are, the only reason he didn’t beat the crap out of us is my mother wouldn’t let him. She was the only person I know of who knew it, but since I listened to rock and not country and refused to back down, he hated me and treated me like crap. Stupid reason I know. He hid it well, everybody else thought he was a “good ol boy”...while he was obnoxious, abusive and insulting to me when they left the room. I can’t count the times he told me “you’re full of s#!t you don’t know what the f*&% you’re talking about.” Screaming as loud as he could. And that’s barely scratching the surface.

Women were not put on this planet to be someone’s punching bag, and when they finally fight back, often in fear for their lives, they don’t get a fair shake. I know exactly how she felt if she did actually kill the guy, which it sounds like she didn’t do. I can’t tell you how many times I felt that way. The only difference is I didn’t pull the trigger...I came really really close though...scary...

People who have never been through this need to look into it and find out just what really happens, just how bad it can get, and why someone would get to the point of murder. In many cases it might just actually be justified...it’s really scary facing someone twice your size who’s been abusing you for years, even verbally. I’m just glad my mother had guts enough to stand up for us. When I was very small, no more than 3, he beat either me or my sister till he left bruises. She stopped it right there. Her father beat the crap out of her for years. I guess I got lucky, but it was bad enough. If you think this woman should still be in prison, you need to do some research.
