When on the freeway, most people tend to multitask (text, eat, look at the scenery). I only do it when there are no cars near me that could come within touching me within a certain time frame. Some of what I know I’ve learned the hard way, some from the mistakes of others. Which reminds me, I HIGHLY recommend to young drivers that they watch a LOT of those russian (and now quite a few from the US) dash cam crash videos. A LOT can be learned from them.
My wife does this routinely as a front seat passenger, much to my irritation.
Almost every time I am on the Interstate, if I leave room for 10 cars at 60 mph, 10 cars pull into that space.
Yes, when I drive in metro Atlanta, I can never maintain the appropriate distance. That is when it is all the more important to be constantly vigilant.
On rural interstates, it is not hard to maintain a safe distance.
