Is Putin plotting war in Europe? Experts warn Russia is 'actively preparing' for conflict with NATO

The increasing scale and frequency of military exercises undertaken by Russia means Vladimir Putin is 'actively preparing' for war in Europe, a think tank has warned.

Research that analysed two recent large-scale exercises by Russia and NATO found that each side was training with 'most likely war plans in mind'.

But the report warned that NATO was 'unable to match' the scale of those conducted by Moscow.

Ian Kearns, director of the London-based European Leadership Network, which conducted the study, said the war games 'are contributing to a climate of mistrust' that have 'on occasion become the focal point for some quite close encounters between the NATO and Russian militaries.'

The research found signs that 'Russia is preparing for a conflict with NATO and NATO is preparing for a possible confrontation with Russia.'

The ELN study said NATO plans approximately 270 exercises this year, while Russia has announced 4,000 drills at all levels.

A Russian exercise in March involved 80,000 personnel, while NATO's Allied Shield in June mobilized 15,000 people from 19 NATO countries and three partner states.

The report states: 'Whilst spokespeople may maintain that these operations are targeted against only hypothetical opponents, the nature and scale of the operations indicate otherwise.'

Relations between Russia and the West have been in the deep freeze since Russia's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine last year.

“Putin will try to take Ukraine before The Kenyan and Valerie Jarrett leave office ...”

I don’t think so. But I do think they will undermine the administration and exert more influence in the region until the election is settled. If it’s Hillary, they move. If it is a Republican, they move a bit more slowly. If it’s a Conservative, they curse under their breath and go home.

Was watching a documentary about Churchill recently, and it came to mind just how fragile the world order was in the early days of WWII. We tend to look back on historical events as though they were inevitable. The results of WWII were not inevitable, and England could have easily fallen to the Germans. What would have happened if Germany had developed atomic weapons before us? There are a lot of ‘what ifs’ like this.

Forwarding to today, no one should believe that we can't be at risk as a nation if we keep making the same mistakes as we have been. It's easy to forget those things when you are posting your latest selfie on social media.

With the great sissifiication of America by 40 plus years of feminism and the democrats war on men and boys Putin sees his opening. There are still some men in the world but fewer and fewer in the west.

I'm horrified my sons wear sock-lets, they seem unmoved by my taunts.

Where are the men?

Drinking lattes and taking adderal.

Putin is waiting on the American economy to crash. Then, it’s game on.

That is what I read. The generals want to arm Ukraine, but all the proposals reaching Valerie Jarrett level are shot down.

I know I differ on this topic with a lot of FR, but there is no way Putin "takes" Ukraine.

Putin is in no way interested in occupying a country half filled with people hostile to Russia. Population-wide, Ukraine would probably split 60-40 (50-50 at the best) against joining the Russian Federation. There is no way this would be governable, and is vastly different from Crimea, where the people were begging to join Russia, and indeed, coming under Russia's protection likely prevented those people from experiencing the kind of horror that Donetsk and Lughansk suffered at the hands of Kiev and their Pravvy Sektor goons.

I think on the whole, Ukraine would be a headache that Putin doesn't want.
