"The history of a 390-year old bonsai tree at the National Arboretum that survived the Hiroshima atomic blast ..."

So, the bonsai tree was "started" in 1625 (2015 - 309).
How has the age been verified?
But just imagine, what was going in 1625 AD?
Incredible if true.

Here in the Sandia Mountains there is a guy who tags trees after determining their age with a core. These are average size Ponderosa Pines.

On the tag he puts a historical event that occurred the year the tree germinated.

These include the start of the War of the Roses (1455), the birth of Elizabeth I (1533), the birth of Joan of Arc (1413), and 1st performance of Hamlet (1601).

That is one awesome bonsai, from the Edo period
or early Tokugawa reign. Planted when the unification
of the country was just starting.

For a dramatized view of this time check out the
“Tokugowa Chronicles” on Youtube.

A 13 part series with English subtitles.

How has the age been verified?

They cut it down and counted the rings of course.
