What Voters See In Donald Trump
http://www.wsj.com ^ | 7/3072015 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 07/31/2015 11:57:36 AM PDT by conservativejoy

I had a conversation this week with a longtime acquaintance who supports Donald Trump. She’s in her 60s, resides in north Georgia near the Tennessee line, lives on Social Security. She voted for Barack Obama in 2008 and was in fact the first person who alerted me to the breadth of his support. In 2012 she voted Republican, disappointed in Mr. Obama not from the left or the right but the center: He couldn’t make anything work or get anything done.

So, why Trump? “The whole country will be in better shape. And ISIS won’t like it that he’s in charge. He’s very wealthy and can turn around the economy. He’ll get things moving. The Donald will kick a—.” She knows other supporters locally and among friends of her son, an Iraq vet. “They’re completely disgusted and just furious, and he’s igniting their passion. He’s telling them ‘I will make this country great again,’ and they believe him.” Mr. Trump is dismissed as exciting, but “we have to get excited to get up out of the chair to vote.”

Does he strike her as a serious man, a patriot? Yes. “All he does is talk about how great this country is and how greater he can make it, how he wants to get good trade deals and take care of veterans. . . . He doesn’t need this job, he’s already got everything, it’s a pay cut. He doesn’t need the stature. I think he wants the job because he wants to do it.”

Does he have common sense? Yes, she says, he is concerned about what everyone is concerned about, except politicians. “A lot of deals have to be made and he knows the art of the deal. The biggest problem is all the illegal immigrants.”

They’re all wrapped up in the sizzle without bothering to find out if there is any steak behind it.

We'll find out in November when the registration deadline comes for the first GOP primary.

Dollars to doughnuts Trump withdraws and endorses Cruz.

Trump can't afford the pay cut the POTUS job would entail, but he can be kingmaker.

But with the professional political class there is no steak and definitely no sizzle!

At least Trump has sizzle.

There's about $10 Billion of steak behind it.

Trump can’t afford the pay cut? Trump is not depending on the presidential paycheck to make ends meet if he were to win election to the presidency.

I think people like him because he’s willing to us come out and criticize Obama without fear. I wish the other politicians would realize that there’s a well of hatred of Obama and his policies that they need to draw on.

Other than that, Trump has nothing to offer. And he can’t win an election on hating Mexicans, which seems to be his main stock in trade...although even there he doesn’t offer a program.

He’s just a mouth, but at the same time, I think voters would like to see the other politicians get mouthier too.

I think this is wishful thinking by some people. Trump can afford the paycut, he’s worth billions and he doesn’t need to make another cent for the rest of his life. Money will not be the reason he gets out, if he gets out.

It's like Mark Cuban said the other day, he doesn't care what Trump is saying he just likes that he's saying it. That sums up his supporters in a nutshell.

You don’t acquire ten billion dollars by not caring about money.

What pay cut? His businesses will continue to thrive. His sons and daughter have been groomed to handle it, and you’ll begin to see them do things and make deals right along. Trump, Inc. won’t miss a beat.

And as the American economy begins to gain momentum and get back up to speed, the Trump machine will participate, along with millions of other businesses that have been languishing under the muslim communist’s regime. Not to mention all the new start-up enterprises that will be born. IMHO.

JRK also was a very rich man when he ran for president. He donated his paycheck to charity or turned it back (can’t remember I did not pay much attention to politics in those days, I was quite young.) Anyway, I would not be the slightest bit surprised if Donald Trump would do the same thing, if he were elected, he can afford it. His billions are not going to go away.

He has made it as far as wealth goes. What’s left for him in that direction? To be the very richest? To have the opportunity to be POTUS while so many in positions of influence are against him is not something to be passed up.
