Windows 10 quickie upgrade info (vanity)

You don't have to wait for your win 10 "reservation", you can upgrade whenever you want by running this:

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Choose "upgrade this computer". This requires the latest version of 8.1 (or 7). You won't need to input a key. The download is about 5 gigabytes. This will keep all your programs installed and keep all your personal files. (you can do a fresh install after the upgrade if you want)

You can choose either express or custom install, I chose custom install and unchecked about 12 scary sounding privacy settings.

Overall my experience was painless and successful. I did have to manually upgrade my video driver to get things looking great, but that's minor and expected.

I strongly recommend "classic shell" for those familiar with the old style windows start menu.

Besides the Alt + esc alternative, also try winkey plus tab.

That's really not so far fetched ....

The ad says these kids touch every screen, never remember paswords and a few other geek things that scare the shit out of me.

My wife has 7 and its great. She has no interest in changing right now either.

I had 8 on my laptop, and hated it. So, I was very happy to try 10. And so far, it looks really really good to me. I’ve been running it all day with no problems at all.

I understand that was the case with 8.

But 10 has restored the start menu. So I still don’t understand why you would need the classic shell.

If there's a stack of open files Win-10 allows the cursor to hover over it and view
whichever one it's over to be seen in full page without clicking it. But no other shortcut
for the keyboard to do that with.

Maybe somebody knows how, if possible.

It isn’t bad, I have only experienced 4 black screens in 4 hours which required a complete reboot.
I’m stubborn and still running IE 11 instead of that “edge” thingy..

I wonder what I have done wrong....
Are you still using IE or Edge?

100% correct.

Plus, I’m on a satellite ISP at home. I wonder how long that’ll take to download 5 Gb.

My “anytime” capacity before throttling is 10 Gb, and I get 15 Gb of “2 AM to 6 AM” bonus bytes (or maybe it’s 8 AM), so I’ll schedule it for a 2 AM download some day...

I haven’t used IE for many years. Mainly I’ve used Firefox and Chrome. Edge looks pretty good though from the little bit I messed around with it today. But I haven’t used it enough to really say for sure yet.

That may be where my issues are then, using IE.
Familiarizing with Edge may be beneficial.

Strange.

I’ve always called it “Infernal Excrement”. (Or just Flaming Sh** when in private.)
