The A2 is a little more versatile, I would think.

I’ve always been a .30 cal. kind of guy,I see the M4 as a high powered submachine gun.

The desire to go carbine over rifle has to do with the increasing role of urban combat over longer distance engagement. The 5.56 loses alot of ooomph over 500-600 meters...and typically most force on force engagements are at less than 300 meters..so a shorter carbine length will fill that role better...lighter, same accuracy etc.

The Rifleman’s Creed

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. Without me my rifle is useless. Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than the enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will. My rifle and I know that what counts in war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, or the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit.

My rifle is human, even as I am human, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weaknesses, its strengths, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other.

Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and I are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life.

So be it, until victory is America’s and there is no enemy.

This is foolish. The military needs to stop thinking of one rifle and start thinking about using weapons appropriate to the battlefield. One theater might call for a carbine, another might be more suitable for a longer range 7.62 rifle.

With the new round they are getting 2925fps from the 14in barrel.

Amazing.

I’d rather it read, “Marines switch back to M14”!

I have a M1A and it is by far my favorite rifle. The .308 is a fabulous round good for almost anything that needs to be killed.

For most modern combat situations the 5.56 is a much better suited round. I guarantee toting around an M14 with 250 rounds vs. a M4 with 250 rounds is night and day different. Clearing houses and buildings is much better work with a M4.

The major problem with the military is politicians not weapons in spite of all their (politicians) efforts.
