Speaking as a “computer” guy... Best thing you can do is download all the latest drivers, re-install Windows 7 fresh, apply updates, and then apply remaining drivers. That is the BEST way to cleanup a used pc.

The other option as some mentioned is buy a Mac. That’s what PC techs buy when they don’t feel like bringing their work home with them.

On a side note you may be eligible for a free Windows 10 license too. A fresh install of that will clean things up. I don’t know the age of the laptop but that version looks pretty good. Way better then the 8/8.1 or Vista disaster.

But being a smart ass when someone is requesting help is just the way some people are, I guess.

Go check out dennis' posting history on any one of the Mac threads. Any single one, going back years. There are a lot of them.

It's funny that, relatively speaking, very few of the 700+ Mac users who rely on those threads for information just like he is seeking here are not disrupting his thread.

Ask yourself why that is.

If you have stubborn malware like rootkits and you don’t want to avoid reinstalling, combofix from bleeping computer is a pretty good one.

Are you new to the internet? :)

Wasn't aware of dennisw’s Mac posting history.
Now you know why I usually keep quiet.

Hmm.. You make a good point... Plus the “smart ass” comment didn’t include broad derogatory comments at people as the OPs old posts do in mac threads.

Your opinion only.

When your W 10 decides to download and install a buggy update without your permission while you're in the middle of a time critical project, you may see the light.

If the hard drive has never been wiped/reformatted, it probably has a restore partition. You can make either DVD’s or a thumb drive and do a clean install of the system, back to the original out of box state. The advantage of making the copy of this, rather than using the parition itself, is that in case of hard drive failure/replacement, etc., you still have the original backup of the operating system including all drivers, etc. for that specific laptop.

I have done many clean installs. I will see what kind of restore DVDs and recovery partition this laptop has tomorrow when I get it.

I would love to clean it up enuff without resorting to clean install.

I don't encourage you to be quiet. I encourage you to be educated, ask questions, participate, and further the interests of conservatives. Most of all participate– good ideas make this forum great. I speak as someone who has been here since (almost) before it started.

Seriously, go have a look at dennis' posting history in any Mac thread.

Everyone should have a look.

Then come back here and, if you're able, help him solve his problem.

Have you checked out KB article.. KB3073930

It’s a recent tool/package related to this annoying new “feature”.. It allows you to adjust your update preference.

Please keep in mind I’m no Windows 10 evangelist. I used the beta preview for a few days thats about it.
