Todd: Trump Looking Into Getting on the Ballot in 50 States as an Independent

Sunday on NBC’s the ‘Today,” “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd claimed Donald Trump was “looking into how he could get on the ballot in 50 states as an independent candidate” and went on to say that if he “runs as a third party [candidate] it likely makes Hillary Clinton president.”

Todd said, “I’m not going to try to predict anything Trump might do. I think there’s a lot of us that thought he wouldn’t get this far. We didn’t think he would turn in the financial disclosure. I’m through making predictions about how long Trump stays wherever. I think he’s reportedly looking into how he could get on the ballot in 50 states as an independent candidate. He has the resources to do it. I could picture him deciding for he feels unwelcome with the Republicans. If he runs as a third party it likely makes Hillary Clinton president or whoever the Democratic nominee is. In his mind he would say I’m the reason she’s elected. And I can picture him wanting to have that honor.

Wow, quick to dismiss Cruz. Why is that? Because you believe the polls that have him at 4%?

I guess Ted should just drop out then?

Millions of conservatives will not vote for Bush if he is the nominee.
And Bush will lose like McCain and Romney.

So what difference does it really make?

Bush would lose either way.

2016 would look just like 1992.
Hillary wins with 40% BUT 370 electoral votes.

2 minutes after the networks call it for her, Paul Begala and Lanny Davis are on tv saying “the people have spoken, all Americans have to rally around her”.

I do believe them. Cruz is more willing than some to really get into the celebrity culture, but he isn't there yet.

I think he is still a ways away and that this isn't his time. For one thing, he still has a habit of going into the policy weeds when we have drifted even further into big-picture, visionary kinds of minimalist politics. Think "hope and change." In 1980, Reagan really ran on only two issues, national defense and the economy and he summed up each in about one line. Cruz isn't quite there yet. Brilliant guy, very solid conservative. We'll see.

I'm serious...if it kills the GOP it's good by me. This country is being destroyed before our eyes and the GOP is as guilty as the democrats.

Today, the GOP establishment had the opportunity to defund Planned Parenthood, but not only did they pi$$ that away, they also approved of McConnell's lies to their caucus.

FUGOP!!!

Here's my numbers:
If there were a Trump / Cruz ticket or vice versa as independents:

I 40% D 38% R 24%

And, in which case, who runs Congress? There would be zero Independents, so obviously there would be a large majority of Democrats.

Democrats that are dead set against the Executive on any and every issue.

What, pray tell, does this accomplish?

If Bush is the nominee then this is a good thing.

If Cruz is the nominee then this is a bad thing.

And I'm wondering if Trump is a Hillary put-up.

No way.

This would be ‘92 redux, another D wins with 43% of the vote.

We’ll know on Nov 14.
That’s the last date to register for the Texas R primary.

If Trump is in the Texas R primary, I’ve been told a “sore loser” law prevents him from running in Nov 2016 if he’s not the R nominee.

No R or I is going to have a prayer of winning POTUS without Texas 38 EVs.

If the GOP wanted to win elections they would quit making promises
during the election cycle only to ignore those promises once elected.

Trumps strength comes from GOP weakness.

The solution for the GOP is to quit ignoring the issues of millions of conservatives
and you won’t have the Trumps of the world picking off American voters.

I’m not so sure. If Trump ran as an Independent he would almost certainly shift left and cause more problems for the Dems than the GOP. It could happen that way even if he sticks to the Republicans but checking out the viability of a third party run is perfectly natural IMO under these circumstances.

Maybe sooner. In some states you register for both primary and general at the same time. However most states don’t apply it to presidential candidates.

In 2012 Gary Johnson missed the Michigan deadline to switch by 3 minutes and tried to get a stand in with the same name to run as a libertarian.
