Then I tell them, imagine it's a billion light years away. Even if one could travel at the speed of light, it would mean you'd get there two billion years after the original light (the one you saw) had left its point of origin.

Yup, that’s right. And before you’ve even gone an 1/8th. of that distance everything and everyone you left on Earth would be long gone.
