New Orleans-area filming on a "Roots" remake, slated to air on three A&E networks in 2016, is expected to begin in mid-August. An open call for background actors was issued Tuesday (July 21) by Caballero Casting. The project, to be simulcast on History, A&E and Lifetime, was announced in April.

The four-night, eight-hour project will film here through December. Filming will also take place in Africa, an A&E spokesman said Wednesday.

Laurence Fishburne will portray Alex Haley in the "Roots" remake, based on Haley's novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family" as well as new historical scholarship, according to A&E's initial announcement of the project.

The original 12-hour 1977 miniseries, starring LeVar Burton as the slave Kunta Kinte, was a cultural landmark and ratings powerhouse. Burton is a co-executive producer of the new project.

Thank you MLB, NFL Network, and the SEC channels. The first version was OK until we found out it was pure fiction. I’m sure that the new version will end in a conflagration in Ferguson, MO. with Mr/Ms/Whoever Jenner rescuing all of the darkies from the evil White racist policemen. Al Sharpton will have a cameo role, of course.

I suspect NOI alumnus Haley wished it would have stirred up racial animosity, back then.

O.J. Simpson will not be available. What a shame.

My mistake. John Amos played the older Toby though. I forgot about Ben Vereen. He was great in the role of Chicken George. Regardless, I really liked the miniseries.

Fine, as long as the white guy “self-identifies as black.

Heck, a white gal who self-identifies as a Black, Lesbian, Transgender, male could play Kunte Kinte! LOL!

based on Haley's novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family"

Shouldn't that be "based on Harold Courlander's and Alex Haley's novel "Roots: The Saga of an American Family"?

In this new era of lies and deceptions, they can really fudge the script and not worry about Alex Haley’s plagiarism.

They could even let Doris Kearns Goodwin write part of the script. She is pretty good at plagiarism, too.

Yes, I admitted my mistake, so I won’t do it again. I wish people would read all the threads before reposting what others have said.

“They have a part for Rachel Dolezal?”

LOL,that’s funny.

The series is nicely timed right before the 2016 Prez elections in order to keep/get the Blacks all het up and out to vote Dem. Heaven knows the Dems must keep their “folks” brainwashed and properly ensconced on the mental Plantation.

You know what? I blame the blacks for allowing themselves to be manipulated without doing their own research.

Ya think this version might be a bit “edgier” than the original?

I got it. They can write the script with a character, played by O.J. Simpson, who plays the part of a bongo drummer in a prison band playing music for shemale dancers. The producers can ask the Nevada State Prison for permission to shoot the scene inside the joint.

They will probably find a way to incorporate Obama into it. That alone is enough for me not to watch.

A few years ago, a friend and I visited Thomas Jefferson's home in Virginia. Included was a short film, which among other things, addressed Jefferson's relationship with his slaves (particularly Sally Hemmings). Wouldn't you know — at the very end there was a scene with Obama. Can't keep the narcisist-in-chief out of anything good.

Probably. The original Roots had an all-star cast. Most of the actors today don’t seem as talented.
