I was just in Asheville as I am monthly

Looney tunes abounds

Grove Park Inn is very cool though

It’s OK, trees can’t get herpes.

The Beats

Think Kerouac and Ginsberg and Cassidy and Burroughs and Bukowski all preceded the free speech crap which kinda preceded the Hippies a bit even

Cassidy due to Kesey and the Dead was the bridge between the Beats and the Hippies

I find it a fascinating read albeit an indulgence of decadence

Especially the Beats and Free Speech which had big faggotry overtones

And last but not least

81

The Hells Angels had their role

Berkeleys first radicalism really was pre WWI where they worked for Indian independence movement and later 1930s when Debs types infiltrated

You are correct. And you write like a Beat poet. Smooth.

Ginsberg (1926-97) was the gay Marxist who, sadly, gets the media attention.

William Burroughs (1914-97) is a much better writer than Ginsberg.

I shall take your word for it: Cassidy was the bridge between Beats and Hippies.

Ralph Sonny Barger (1938-) started the evil Hells Angels in his garage in San Leandro. Barger still gives talks in Northridge near Los Angeles these days.

I shall take your word for it: Berkeley radicals started with the Indian independence movement.

William Everson and Kenneth Rexroth moved from Fresno to Eugene, Oregon during WWII (objectors) and then to San Francisco where the installed a printing press at City Light store on Columbus Avenue in SF.

William Everson is probably the best poet of the whole Beat generation. He called himself, “Pre-Beat.”

I hope you get to Tommy’s Joynt on Van Ness to get a nice lunch.

I'd rather have them out in the woods, than disgracing the streets of urban cities as OWS proptesters.

Oh dear me... Nutbags galore... These vacant people are looking for something to fill their souls. (I bet they came from Asheville, or maybe Durham or Chapel Hill. As a resident of NC I can say that’s where they’d be from.)

You’re getting too good at these histories. Starting to get like Roger McGrath.

My beauty queen southern belle mom was kinda beat

She’d wear capris and Dior flats and dark turtlenecks and looked like Laura Petrie

She read Rand and Kerouac and Alan Watts and tried Burroughs and was a fixture at New Stage and Little Theater

And took me to coffee houses where the Beats morphed into folk.....she loved Leonard Cohen and Tom what’s his name...Paxton and Melanie who oddly enough I knew much later

And they read poetry at coffee houses

Dad was a Goldwater conservative and mom was a bit more moderate but still to the right

A fighter pilot she was always the only girl for him so he indulged her

It broadened my young experiences

She always thought Cassady handsome never knowing he was really I think a repressed gay man possibly

When I told her the Dead wrote a tribute song to him her fondness for him faded

She did not like a Hippies....found them dirty and unimaginative and preachy

I write like I do from too much HST as a kid....I confess

You and I remember when the establishment meant something totally different from today and folks pushed back a bit

The establishment obviously better than the mayhem and self loathing of today

Could be stifling

Besides you know that I had to rebel against all that....didn’t we all some

Thank you. I admire your father’s flying and support of Goldwater. I hope your mother appreciated the lively culture of San Francisco and Berkeley.
