The Journey Story (Full Length Video)
Well tonight, my little girl and I attended a free concert held at the Southlands Mall in Aurora, Colorado. I have to attend two concerts for Music Appreciation class and write reports about them so this was a good opportunity to get out of the house and maybe knock out one of the mandatory concerts. The band, That Eighties Band, is local, and they were very good live, IMO. The very young, teens, middle aged, an old alike were out in front of the stage area dancing and singing at this outdoor venue and having a grand old time. Some of the tunes they played probably sound better than what the actual bands can do live, IMO. My little daughter and I both enjoyed it. One of the songs they played was a Journey cover...Separate Ways. In the meantime, a FRiend sent to me this Journey documentary that originally aired on VH1 in February 2001. I found it really interesting and just got finished watching it. Maybe some of the other 80s music fans/Journey fans out there in FR land will enjoy it, too, so I'm passing it along FYI.
Here is the documentary as listed on IMDB:
Does anyone remember when Randy Jackson (American Idol) was the bassist for Journey?
His Bass playing changed the sound of the band. He’s very talented. Not often the Bass does that.
Maybe someone will. I’ll have to check the Wiki link.
Sorry not looking for answer just checking fellow FReepers trivia knowledge. :)
He was on the Raised on Radio Album.
Randy Jackson is listed at Wiki. I’m not familiar with all the members past and present.
lol...I kinda realized that after I sent answer! :)
Many people who know Jackson as Idol’s “dawg”-spouting hipster in thick glasses don’t realize that he was once one of music’s most successful session bassists, working as a studio hired hand for top artists. Beginning with jazz fusion pioneers Jean-Luc Ponty and Billy Cobham, Jackson eventually built a resume that included Tracy Chapman, Aretha Franklin, the Divinyls, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, Herbie Hancock and the Charlie Daniels Band.
Yes, he also joined Journey in the ‘80s when that band had the amazingly bad idea to replace its drummer and bassist with studio players. (The drummer had hair plugs and Jackson wore parachute pants. Deadly.) And he’s also a producer who never hesitates to mention his work with Mariah Carey or the Grammy he’s won (for a 2001 Gladys Knight record, he usually doesn’t add).
Journey was a nice band for a young girl to see live back in the day. Very clean. I saw them live in 1980, and they were great live. I doubt a cover band could be better. But they were one of the opening acts for the Stones at that concert. As a teenage girl, I was there to see Journey, but those Stones fans were rough. LOL. They booed the whole time Journey was on-stage.
In addition to being a great vocal talent, Steve Perry, according to what I’ve heard, is a real nice guy. I still have their albums on vinyl. But their music is not my taste anymore. The only track I still like is this one:

I remember him. That fro and those pink polka dot pants. Had to laugh hard at that outfit.
Stone in Love!!!!
Those pants were Zubaz I believe. I had a couple pairs. One was white with red zebra stripes.
The were mondo cool! :)
I’m definitely not saying this cover band was better than Journey, but I thought they did a great job playing a WIDE variety of 80s tunes from all sorts of bands. Their Guns and Roses was very good.
I hope Perry has mellowed out with age. In this video, he seems sorta cold and very hard to work with and to be around. I’m not saying that he’s not nice, but he didn’t seem to be a big people person to put it mildly. Lots of quirks.
Here’s a touching story about Perry I found belatedly last year.
Steve Perry reveals the love of his lifetime, his battle with cancer and explains his run-in with Martha Quinn
Thanks for your memories! I’ll check out vid.
You were smart. I wish I would have kept all of mine!
Yeah, they talk about their early years in the vid prior to Perry and how they had some die hard fans even though they weren’t much of a success. It was surprising to me, as stated in video, that Neal Schon left school and was in Santana at 15!
I was thinking of that story when I wrote that he sounds like a nice guy. It’s really sad about his girlfriend.
I’ll have to watch that documentary you posted when I have a chance. Thanks for sharing it. :-)
