Russell Wilson Says He and Ciara Will Practice Abstinence Until Marriage
Sporting News ^ | 7/

Sigh ... this is a thing now, people.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson was part of a recent public Q&A session at The Rock Church with pastor Miles McPherson, a man who spent four seasons as a defensive back for the Chargers. The topic of Wilson's personal life came up — specifically, his girlfriend Ciara, who happens to be a critically acclaimed recording artist.

Wilson, a man of strong faith, told McPherson a story about telling a friend that Ciara was the girl he wanted to be with before he ever met her.

The discussion about his personal life continued with Wilson explaining how he and Ciara plan to practice abstinence until they're married. (Discussion begins around the 23:15 mark)

The way he says it is even more interesting than the substance of it. "God told me to lead her," implying that he is somehow doing a good deed by taking her on down the path of abstinence.

Aaron Rodgers' girlfriend Olivia Munn has gone on record stating the couple won't have sex on game days, while Giants teammates attribute cornerback Prince Amukamara's breakout season to having more sex.

So yeah, there's that.

Football season really can't get here soon enough.

Good for Russell. Standing up for fidelity.

And the SN mocks it.

Perhaps because he divorced his wife and began dating a hotter woman.

Sorry - but I really don’t want news on whether, with whom, when, where, how, or how often anyone is having sex.

Keep this up and I’ll have to coin some new term - like maybe “flamboyant Christians” or “flaming pre-marital virgins”.

Why do people think it necessary to tell us about their personal life?

The two are not necessarily connected. Possibly he had scriptural reasons the divorce was justified. Or, perhaps the divorce was not his choice.

Jesus spoke, not favorably, of those who ostentatiously practice good deeds or pray in public.

I have no idea—but I don’t find any one’s personal life all that interesting.

Exactly! And as the topic is sex, it’s also unseemly. How would this be any different than a married Christian heterosexual man publicly discussing that he only has sex with his wife?

Flaming Biblical Heterosexuals!

Jesus spoke, not favorably, of those who ostentatiously practice good deeds or pray in public.

I believe that had to do with why they did so. I had never heard of Russell Wilson or Ciara, but if he is doing this in public to show that the hedonistic culture can be rejected rather than for public acclaim, I imagine Jesus would approve. Context always matters.

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them . . . So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets . . . to be honored by others . . . And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others."

In a society that accepted decent values, even if many fell short, it was not necessary to set the example in this way, but Jesus still left an out. He qualified every restriction based on the motive for doing good in public. Russell Wilson is not necessarily doing this ostentatiously or for public admiration; I hope he is doing it for the right reasons.

He is a flaming hypocrite. If they are going to “practice” abstinence before marriage, it sounds as if their practices were not going so well prior to their engagement, or did I read this incorrectly?

I hope so, too. And since I don’t know him, I’m not going to judge his motives.

“Practice Abstinence”

How much practice does it take?

I think you are misreading it. I don’t think they are even engaged yet.

It’s dangerous to tell the world how good you plan to be. Just behave yourself and say nothing. If, after you’re married, you must answer such a question, by all means tells people of your abstinence (the world does need this message). Don’t jump the gun though.

Just ask Bristol how foolish you can end up looking.

Guess I read that wrong, still, the article article’s tenor made it sound as if they had not been practicing previously. Again, probably a misread on my part.

Apparently, Percy Harvin and Wilson’s previous wife had an affair.
