Why Your Keurig Is Your New Favorite Bartender

Is your kitchen crammed with tools and appliances you rarely put to use? Give them a new job: cocktails! Sure, your French press was meant for making coffee — not sangria — but it’s actually perfect for whipping up the latter.

Here’s a recipe for doing just that — and three more hacks for using common appliances to put fresh twists on summer sippers.

Sure, it’s meant for making fruit and veggie smoothies, but the NutriBullet is also a great summer drinks tool, says Yusef Austin, “cocktail architect” for BR Guest Hospitality, which includes Dos Caminos.

the keurig is pricey. I’ll stick with the $12 French Press I got from a shopping channel. Cleanup is easy and I don’t have to buy k-cups.

I wish I could make coffee as well as my K-cup brewer. It can’t be done. And every cup is fresh. I love it.

Actually, it's really easy.
- Take some beans, pour them in your grinder.
- Grind them.
- Pour grounds into press.
- Add boiling water.
- In a couple minutes, pour into cup in which you have already placed a spoonful or so of sugar, to taste.
Add a splash of Bailey's or Amaretto or cheap scotch or honey bourbon or etc or etc.

Your crappy coffee problem is solved! (And for cheaper than the gayrig can do it!)

I found a grinder specifically designed for K-cups. It’s awesome.

Every device I’ve seen for making coffee does one thing: drip hot water over coffee grounds. They do it more or less elaborately and their cost is wildly variable. What they do, regardless, is ultimately the same thing.

I’ve got an old 22 cup percolator that’s out at the ranch house, it’s been there as long as I can remember. When my Vet’s come out for the annual deer hunt that’s all we use. Most of them are so young they’ve never even seen one.

I had a coffeemaker I used almost 20 years.

I got rid of it just to have a new one. But I’ve never found a better coffeemaker than that first one. it was a Krups.

We’ve had multiple machines and a French press, and I like our Keurig best. My husband likes super dark coffee and I prefer light to medium. Instead of dumping out pots or pouring leftovers into a carafe to be forgotten about, we can each brew a fresh cup of our favorite. I can still buy in bulk and use my generic KCup insert, too. Additionally, our closest relatives are two hours away and we host a lot of parties. Everybody can have the hot beverage they like, and as a hostess it’ one less thing I have to worry about. Actually, my eleven year old nephew loves taking hot drink orders so that he can use the machine (and feel important) lol!

We have the Bunn version of the Keurig. It keeps the water hot, and only takes a few seconds after a cup is brewed to be ready for the next cup. It came with the k-cup drawer, loose ground drawer, pod drawer and a drawer that lets you just pour the hot water into say a cup of hot cocoa.

It’s fantastic, and it saves us lots of money spent on wasted coffee.

I actually thought that for a number of years I made good coffee. I actually do, just not as good as a K-cup machine. I have used a grinder for years. I have a French Press, but the coffee didn't taste as strong as I like it (my wife and I like coffee that borders on espresso), and there is a lot of cleanup involved. I usually made drip coffee, but it gets old eventually due to constant heating.

I recently bought a new K-cup machine called iCoffee. This machine features a rotating needle that ensures that all the grounds in the K-cup are utilized. It is actually compared to a French Press in the style of coffee it makes. Fortunately, I have found several K-cups that have the flavor I look for: Peet's Major Dickason's Blend and Barista Prima Italian Roast. Even if I produce a pot that tastes as good or near it, after the first couple of cups it starts to burn. And I seldom add any flavorings or alcohols to coffee except during winter.

The only drawback to K-cups is the price. But I enjoy every single fresh cup of coffee and never throw out any more old coffee. I guess it won't be long before the government outlaws K-cups because they'll claim they create too much waste for landfills; so I'd better enjoy them while I can.

If you want an espresso like coffee out of a press you need to get a Turkish roast that is very oily after grinding and then grind it course enough that the press won’t clog. Steep and stir before lowering the press.

I also think some of the stove top espresso pots do a fair job.

Thanks, I’ll check that out. The barista Prima Columbian is our fave. Also, I started seedlings in my used KCups after I tossed the grounds into the compost pile. Not for Mother Earth, but for my wallet lol!

I get the Peet’s Major Dickason at Costco. $29.99 for 60 K-cups.
